I'm a huge music fan... I sing all the time and surely look quite strange while drive in a car... but I don't care. I just love the joy of singing... and I love learning new songs. Usually, it's story songs. Just bought "Great Big Sea's" new CD that also came with a DVD of a concert. It rocks! Great Big Sea is a celtic rock group from St. John's Newfoundland. They are five gorgeous guys in their 20's... with voices that could melt butter. But, wow, do they have energy when they sing!

If anyone has Itunes, search for Great Big Seas's "Courage & Patience & Grit" album. It came out last month or so. My absolute favorite songs... Captain Kidd - Very rousing, energetic! Just a fun song.
I'm a Rover - For the guys! Perfect guy song. "I'm a rover seldom sober..."
The Mermaid (Hysterical about a man who falls in love with a mermaid whose bottom half is a fish)
The River Driver - About a 16 year old who goes to work driving logs down the river.
Consequence Free - about living life without worrying
Mari-Mac - My absolute favorite... a tongue twister song that they sing faster and faster about marrying mary mac!

Great instrumentation... vocals... everything!

What are you listening to these days??

I always enjoy country music, but right now I've been into Sarah Groves. She's contemporary Christian and very much like Ginny Owens, another favorite contemporary Christian artist I enjoy.

I like country music, "Alan Jackson" is my favorite. I like "Carrie Underwood" too. I also like "Enya" and I have recently heard the "Celtic Women" group and they are pretty good too. I hav some "Enya" CD's but nothing from the "Celtic Women" yet. Now don't laugh, but I am a big "Donny Osmond" :woohoo: fan as well. I have been a fan of his since the 70's when the "Osmonds" "One Bad Apple" record came out. Opps! I just gave my age away. Oh well! I may be 48 years old, but I don't feel or act it.

My nephew is in a band in Florida called "Gettendeep". He is the drummer. BUT it isn't my kind of music. It is that Hard Rock/Acid Rock/Head Banger type of music. They got recording contracts and will be going on tour pretty soon. They tour in Florida now. I told him that his music is not my kind of music but we will support him. So if there are any of you out there who like that type of music, let me know and I will give you the bands website.:woohoo:

I listen to everything from Andrea Bocelli to Ozzy, and all those inbetween :)
My son is the bassist in two local "death metal/christian metal/head-bangin" bands; and while I totally support the bands, its not my type of music. *Kim, I can relate to you and your nephews relationship..haha

I saw "Great Big Sea" on PBS a couple of years ago and really liked their sound and energy. I have one of their cds - can't remember the name of it. I should dig it out again.

Right now in my car I have been listening to Daughtry, Incubus, Evanescence, and LiVE.

What are some of the Christian singers/groups you like? I don't have many CD's of Christian music. I am always looking for suggestions on Christian Music. I do have some Sandi Patti, Kathy Troccoli, Rebecca St. James, Amy Grant. I think that is about it.

I have a teenage son who of course is really into his music soooo I "get" to listen to lots of rap :) Thank goodness my daughter likes the teeny-boper stuff 'cause I'd much rather listen to that :)
Jill-you think you look funny singing in the car--I bet I look hilarious belting out rap music :)

Add me to the list of those who sing in the car! My car's window sticker says "Play Dead" -And I do,....loud!

In fact, while my son was a teenager, it wasn't unusual for him to ask his dad & I to please turn the music down. How backwards is that?

Billy Joel, Paul Simon's two most recent albums, Arlo Guthrie, and the Irish Tenors. One of my goals is to be well enough to see the Tenors when they come to New York on their annual St. Patrick's Day tour. Oh, and we just bought some cello music (Yo-Yo Ma, of course) for my daughter who plays the cello. Very relaxing, good music to de-stress with.

The Bobs. Amazing a capella group out of LA, they are musically gifted, very diverse, and funny as hell. They recently put out "Rhapsody in Bob," done with a pianist. The pianist played Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, and the four Bobs did all the other instrumental parts with their voices. It is truly a tour de force. You can get it on Amazon, I think.

I'm not a Christian, but I can tell you that the Irish Tenors "Sacred" is a really beautiful collection of Christian music. Definitely worth a listen. And their Christmas album "We Three Kings" is a must-have for the holiday season.

I love 80's music so in the car my radio is on 105.1 from Orlando because their selections are awesome. I love Enya as well.

Hugs,
Barb:hi:

OH yeah and I am a closet listener of 80's heavy metal.:smile tee

I'm still in love with 70s and 80s music ;) Love it!! I love 80s hair bands like Def Leppard, but I love other 80s stuff -- old Madonna, Prince, etc. I like 70s stuff too.

N'Importe Qui mentioned Arlo Guthrie, who I just love and who I met once, as he lives not far from my parents in Massachusetts.... "City of New Orleans" is a GREAT song, and of course.... Alice's Restaurant Massacre -- "You can get...anything you want... at Alice's Restaurant... ('ceptin Alice)" (HILARIOUS SONG)

I am soooo out of the loop when it comes to modern music because I don't really like hip-hop, rap, etc.

I have such eclectic preferences in music. What I listen to depends on my mood at the moment. I like classical music, big band sounds, often get stuck in a rut listening to oldies 50s & 60s stuff, more modern pop sounds and sometimes country (but ONLY when I am in the Southwest where country just "feels right"). Don't care for rap or hip-hop, though. Since we are trying to clean out stuff and prepare to move and downsize (if the market EVER picks up again and we can sell the house!), I have been trying to sort through tons of my old 45 rpm and 33 1/3 rpm records (there's no hiding my age, so I might as well admit to owning these oldies). I just can't take all this with me and am having a hard time parting with some of these old records. I absolutely refuse to give up some of them, however. My first edition (first "pressing") album of "Meet The Beetles" definitely stays with me! I also have to part with my big piano and alot of sheet music. :( Just yesterday I looked at keyboards that are a lot more portable and take up little space, but they're just not the same as a big beautiful piano........(sigh)! Since we travel alot, we really enjoy satellite radio in the car as it gives us so many music choices without having to carry lots of CDs with us and we haven't yet graduated to mp3s or iPods.

Sarojini -- That's so cool that you met Arlo! I met Pete Seeger once, and he showed me his famous banjo (It has "This machine surrounds hate and forces it to surrender" written on it).

Arlo plays Carnegie Hall on Thanksgiving weekend every year, and we usually go. And, yes, sometimes he actually does "Alice's Restaurant." This year I wasn't up to it, but my sister and a bunch of her girlfriends brought my daughter (age 11) with them. She loved it.

My daughter is so cool. She loves opera, Billy Joel, classical symphonic music, Arlo, the Irish Tenors, and the Bobs, but thinks that most of the teeny-bopper music the other sixth-graders are listening to is "stupid." You'd think she'd get picked on in middle school, but she is also a butt-kicking athlete and very pretty, so she doesn't get hassled too much for being in the gifted program and "different." I just bought her a shirt that says, "Different est bon," (Different is good -- and there's an accent mark over the first E in different, but I don't know how to get it to come up) and it's her new favorite piece of clothing. I'm so proud of her :smile tee

I forgot to mention Sweet Honey in the Rock -- all female, all black, a cappella group, very political (they originally came out of the Civil Rights movement) and absolutely AMAZING vocal power and harmony. It's hard to believe all that sound is coming out of only five women's voices until you see them live. And then it's still hard to believe ... :)

Annie2 -- Those old records might be worth something. You might post the ones you're not keeping on e-bay. There are a lot of collectors out there.

Jill -- Thanks for starting this thread. What fun to spend time thinking about something other than IC! And it's so interesting to read all the different responses.

Blues Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton and BB King. I am a huge BB King fan. The man is a genius on guitar and a phenomenal performer in person.

Most Favorite of All My kids. They are ten years old and have a two man band. They sing country, gospel, christian rock and southern rock. We travel in a motorhome(cuts down driving time for all of my bathroom breaks)all over to sing in country music oprys and compete in talent competitions. Last summer they placed 4th out of 54 entries, ages 17 & under, in Loretta Lynn's Annual Country Music talent search. I so proud of them! Our living room looks like a recording studio. I feel blessed to have live music in my house on a daily basis. It makes me really happy!

Hey my kids sing country and they take voice lessons from the vocal coach who taught Miranda Lambert's and Casey River' voal coach. Casey Rivers was the Runner up to Cris Young on Nashville Star last season. We are going to see Nashville Star in February. I got a package through the Gaylord hotel where we get to go to a live taping as well as the grand ole opry. I am so excited.

Some of the cover songs my boys sing are sweet home alabama, Boondocks and Folsom Prison Blues. Sounds like you'd be right at home at our house! -Vicki

I like anything Country, which I listen to at work. It also depends what mood that I'm in as well, (I also like the 70's & 80's soft rock). Its somewhat funny, when I'm in the car, and I hear someone's radio turned up REALLY LOUD- I'll turn mine up too (most times its country) and I'll start singing at the top of my lungs--and believe me, you really don't want to hear me sing that loud!!

I'm embarrassed to admit this, but I'm so out of touch with popular music! Is this how my parents felt about the Beatles, the Dave Clark Five, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and all of the "British Invasion" groups in the 60's? As far as my taste goes, I enjoy the aforementioned groups, but I also love jazz and classical music. I live in the Cleveland area - the Cleveland Orchestra is one of the best in the world, and I get to enjoy them in the winter at Severance Hall (a magnificent art-deco concert hall built in the 30's) and in the summer at an outdoor venue called Blossom Music Center. Pack a picnic, sit on the lawn and enjoy the music as the sun goes down!

I have been in love with classical guitar music for decades. My favourite being John Williams playing just about anything from Bach and Vivaldi to Barrios or Classical Jazz. But also growing up in the 70's, I love AC/DC, Little River Band, the Easybeats, INXS Hahahaa.. the list goes on and on. Thank goodness for the stations that play only 70's and 80's music.
Like many of you, I have also been influenced by my children and am now a huge Greenday and Blink 182 fan. I listen to many local bands here like Jet and Misspent Youth. But my latest and most favourite is Miss White and the Diamonds :lmao: ...my 18th year old daughters band. You can check out their music on MySpace.
I too, must fess up to being a rock star of the internal auto scene :lmao:

I like most music from the mid 60's -80's. My fave is Billy Squier and my favorite song is Nobody Knows. Billy wrote it in memory of John Lennon.

I may get around...I may laugh alot...
Now you'd think that I'd be happy with the life I got
Nobody knows...nobody sees
Ain't nobody really knows the inner side o'me...
I may seem secure...I could have it made...
You might think you see a lucky man who made the grade
Nobody knows what dreams I see
Ain't nobody really sure just who they wanna be...
But everybody has a place and time...
A chance to live...a need to find
We all got somethin' that we care about
I propose you find it out...
It's not in a book...or a magazine...
Or the stars who guide our fortunes on the silver screen
Nobody knows...it's up to me
Ain't nobody who can say it like it outght to be...
I see my future at the rainbow's end
Happy hours...timeless friends
And if I ever chance to find my way
Rest assured...I will stay...
You may see your life as a compromise
You may live to find the promise dancin' in your eyes
Nobody knows...it's meant to be...
Let the magic of the moment say it all to me

I am also a Sarah McLachlan fan, I saw her twice at Lilith Fair. The first time she tripped and fell on the stage and continued to sing lying flat on her back! After the song she said "I promise, I have not been drinking!". She's great live.

I am also a long-time fan of the Beatles (yay!), the Eagles, Los Lobos, Bonnie Raitt, Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Counting Crows, the Finn Brothers (also as "Crowded House"), Tom Petty, Squeeze, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and lots more. I don't listen to music as much as I used to (I never thought it would happen to me!) but my current faves include Gnarles Barkley, Matchbox 20, Coldplay, John Mayer, Luce and Nellie Furtado.

I listen to the radio when I'm driving more than anything, I love KFOG -- it's a San Francisco station, but available everywhere online (kfog.com). They play a great selection of the kind of music I like, so if you like what's listed above, you'd probably like KFOG, too! (and if you're already a listener, you'll understand my "yay" comment regarding the Beatles!)

Sandy,
I like Sarah too, the Indigo Girls, Sixpence None the Richer(they came out in Nashville when I lived in TN), and to all of those hair band and alternative people--I also like Def Leppard, Metallica, the Cure, Love and Rockets, Whitesnake, Van Halen, Poison--most of those songs have some memory in my life. Oh yeah, and how can I forget New Order Bizarre Love Triangle? Forgot two more Dead or Alive You Spin Me(my ring tone on my phone) and Safety Dance by Men Without Hats. Rap and hip hop--eeww. Have loved Amy Grant and still sing her songs from memory to this day. Her music had a special place for me personally when the choir at church(Catholic no less)sang "Thy Word" the day before the hearing and then Lean on Me--talk about tearjerkers.
