What to do about dry mouth?

Hi - I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on how to handle dry mouth. I'm not sure which med is the culprit (Elmiron, Atarax, Neurontin or Detrol LA), but the dry mouth side effect is terrible!!! I asked my dentist and he just told me to drink more water. I am, but am still having a really dry mouth. Any words of wisdom guys?

Hi, I have the same problem with P+ and also when I was taking Detrol. You can drink more water or even swish it aoround and spit every so often. I keep a pack of Dry mouth gum by Bioténe with me too. They make Dry mouth toothpaste and substitute saliva.
The latter I haven't tried...it kinda creeps me out.

The gum is a lifesaver, and as your dentist prolly told you....Dry mouth, in excess, can lead to bad breath and worse: cavities.

Atarax and detrol will cause dry mouth. It is not the elmiron or neurontin. I have been dealing with this for a long time. Biotene products are the best to use. Drinking more water does not make a difference. Dry mouth with IC is a very tough issue. Linda Lou

I am having dry mouth since I started nortryptoline. It drives me crazy. What products does biotene make and where can I buy them?

Biotene makes:
Dry mpouth gum, dry mouth toothpaste and artificial saliva. I swear I posted the web addy in my previous post (www.drugstore.com) or you can ask your pharmacist to special order it for you, if you can't find it in the store.

I had this very same problem to the extent tha tI got sores in my mouth. Long term dry mouth also leads to tooth decay and cavitites. So stop it as soon as possible. If the biotene doesnt work, ask you doctor or dentist for salagen. I had no side effects and it is wonderful. Also to prevent the tooth decay use a mouthwash with flouride.

I get that as well and I also get really stuffed up. Im so dry that my sinuses just stop in thier tracks <img src="graemlins/scream.gif" border="0" alt="[scream]" /> . What helps me with the dry mouth is a piece of hard candy or gum. I have never heard of dry mouth gum or toothpaste. What a wonderful thing! maybe I will try that as well. Like every one said, drinks lot's of water, chew some gum. There are these candies i found called Sqyntz. They are sour candy without sugar and without apartame(or whatever that sweetner stuff is that's bad)and since they are sour they make spit. But the have vitamin C so be careful if that aggravates your bladder. Or try keeping some hard candy around, or maybe ice. biggrin.gif
