I have a cystoscopy schduled in about 2 weeks. My pre-op is in week or so. I honestly don't know much about it, but I am thinking since my uro wants a pre-op appointment, she is planning on putting me under.

So i just want to ask a few questions. How long does the procedure last? Should I be planning on taking time off work? If I need time to recover, how long? Will I be in pain afterwards?

I'm just nervous, and want to know what it will be like afterward. How come some doctors put patients under anethesia for this precodure, and some do not?

When I had my cystocscopy they also did a hydrostention and they put me out to do it b/c uro said that it would be too painful for me to handle otherwise. For mine, I think the surgery lasted an hour or so, then recovery. I took the next day off work, and tried to go back the following day, but had to go home cause I was so weak. I don't think that's the case normally though, b/c I've had one done before and I only took off the following day then I was okay. I had pain afterward, took percoset for the next two days, I was kinda sore. I don't remember it being tramatic though, wouldn't worry about it if I had to have another one. Try not to get too nervy, I think that's why it took me a little longer to recover. Also, before surgery my uro gave me valium to take-Loved it, made everything so much nicer!!! Good Luck.

I frequently get a cysto with hydro and the surgery takes about a half an hour to an hour. The doctor puts me under everytime. I tried getting a cysto with botox injections while I was awake one time and I literally kicked the doctor in the face it was so unbearable! I usually take about 2 days off of work and try to get it done on a Thursday or Friday so I have more time to recover. You will have some pain afterwards but it isn't too bad if the doctor gives you strong pain meds. Ask for a week's supply or Vicodin or Percocet just in case you need it.
Good Luck!

Hydro's are one of my main form of treatments. I usually have them done on a Thursday - I guess it takes about an hour - recovery time for me takes a little longer for me than most - as I have to have all sorts of antibotics due to my heart valve, so I'm usually in there for about 6 hours or so (long day) My husband will take me home then, of course I'll have the next day and the weekend off. I usually go back to work on Monday.

If it's a cystoscopy with hydrodistention, it does require anesthesia. You might want to telephone your doctor's office and ask specifically if that is what is scheduled --- some doctors refer to them as "over distention." This has been a major treatment for me since my IC diagnosis and I have had the procedure done forty times now. When I was working, we would schedule me for a Tuesday or Wednesday and I would plan to go back to work the following Monday. I have always had pain medications to take as needed afterwards, but never need them for more than a day or two.

The actual hydrodistention procedure takes five to ten minutes. It also takes time to administer anesthesia, etc., so you will probably be in the surgery room about a half hour, then in recovery for another hour or two.

It's okay to call your doctor's office to ask questions --- and you'll feel much more relaxed if you know what's going to happen.

My uro. actually has no plans of doing a hydro, just the cystoscopy.
