I have State medical/DSHS and they won't cover my Atarax. Have any of you had this problem? It's $30 for the script and I would rather DSHS paid for it.

Thanks,
Moonheart

Are you trying to fill your Rx as brand name or as generic? Many insurance companies will not cover the brand name if a generic is available. Does your insurance company have a mail-out pharmacy? I get my Rx's filled through a mail-out pharmacy and for a 90 day supply I pay $10 for generics or $35 for brand name drugs.

Hi :)

Thanks for your reply. I tried to get it filled as generic and DSHS wouldn't pay for it. I got switched to a managed care plan for the first time so maybe that's it? I'm going to see about getting back on general DSHS and see if that helps.
Would you mind pm'ing me with the name of the pharmacy? I don't mind paying for it if it is that price.
Thanks :)

I have Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) Federal Employee insurance. BCBS has a contract with a mail-out pharmacy, CareMark. Here is an example: Sam has BCBS insurance. His policy says that he can save money by sending his Rx's to their mail-out pharmacy. So he sends his Rx's to the mail-out pharmacy. Unless your policy states that you have access to a mail-out pharmacy, you can't use one. Ask the the pharmacy where you tried to get the atarax filled, if they filled it with a generic Atarax or brand name Atarax. If they filled it using brand name Atarax, ask the pharmacist to fill it using generic Atarax. You will save some money by using generics instead of brand name drugs.

It also can't hurt to ask your Dr. for samples. My insurance won't cover my Cymbalta (cash price: $400/month, and there is no generic!) but my doctor gives me samples all the time so I almost never have to buy it.

A lot of drug companies have programs to supply their products free or at low-cost for low income patients. If you fit in that category, you should look into it.

I have great insurance and don't have a problem getting it filled. However, I recently learned that if I didn't have insurance the the generic version is around $20 - or at least that's what they told me. My husband has also recently started getting his prescriptions filled at Sam's Club. They have a $4 generic prescription list, where all the prescriptions are $4 regardless of whether you have insurance or not. You might want to check into this and see if it's an option. My husband says that Wal-Mart has the same thing. So, this might be a place to check into.

I hope you can find it cheaper.

Good luck,
Jennifer

thank you! I forgot about Walmart! I tried to get my MS Contin generic there but they don't do it for controlled substances. So I will transfer the script over there and should be able to get it right away! I appreciate that so much!
