View Full Version : How expensive is a cysto?

I have too many of the symptoms of IC but my urologist has never mentioned it. Still he said he wanted to do a cysto without anesthesia because he thought it would be a good diagnostic tool.

He does them in the hospital and they are pricey--it will cost me well over $2000 plus whatever my insurance pays. Now I am wondering if it would be cost effective to get a URO who does them in his office.

I'd really appreciate any info you can give me on how much it should cost, with and without anesthesia, especiallyfor people in Washington. PM me if you don't want to post it.

Thanks!

if you had it done in the office w/o anesthesia, it should def. be less expensive ( no anesthesia, no recovery room, no pathology reports) but then again it depends on your deductible and your doctor.

Hi,
Mine was done at the same time as my laparoscopy and the cost for the cystoscopy was $800 but don't think that included anesthesia and recovery.

I had an in-office cystoscopy back in 2004. I can't find the bill so have no way to break down the individual charges, office visit, urinalysis, lab, and all the other poking & prodding that went on that day besides the cystoscopy. I was in there at least an hour. Anyway, the check I wrote for the entire bill was $499.50.
(My insurance has no co-pay and a high deductible so I had to pay the total cost for the visit)

I don't know where you are in Washington, but this was in CDA Idaho, just across the border from Spokane WA.

I had a cysto in the office once without general anstethia and I will never do it again. I was given Xanax but was still uncomfortable. I was also getting Botox injections so I am not sure what was worse the cysto or the injections. If you do decide to get it in office make sure to ask what they will do to reduce the pain and make you more comfortable.

I found a new doctor in Spokane who did the cysto in the office. I haven't got the bill yet but I'm sure I'll have to pay the whole thing.

It was painful but not horrible. He told me to forget I ever heard of IC. However he told me I should go on the IC diet. Said I'd have the problems for a long time but maybe it would go away. Wants me to be on long-term antibiotics.

I don't feel like he helped a lot, but that is the story of my life with the medical profession. I always say I'll never go back again. But then something like this comes up and I have this hope that I'll actually find help!

There are some people without IC who have a problem with some foods and drinks so the IC diet just might help. After you've tried it for several weeks, if it doesn't help, then I suggest you go back to your urologist and ask for further testing to positively rule out IC. It's not unusual for an IC bladder to appear completely normal and healthy until it's stretched under anesthesia. The cysto does help rule out other problems so it's still worthwhile.

Sending healing thoughts,
