Okay, here's my dilemma. I have nasal allergies. Atarax does not really help me that much. If my nose is really itchy/runny, I prefer chlortrimeton or a prescription but I can't take them if I'm already on Atarax.
I have skipped the Atarax sometimes, in order to take the antihistamine I want.
What do you all do?

My suggestion would have to be to ask your doctor about the possibility of taking both --- you'll never know if you don't ask.

I already asked the pharmacist and she suggested not to take both.
I guess my only choices are, do not get allergy symptoms that warrant meds, or stop the Atarax so I can take the meds I want.
I have seen people on this forum who have been on Atarax for a long time, and I'm sure one of them has gotten a cold or bad allergies while on it (or even the flu), and I'm wondering what they did?
Thanks.

My doctor said DEFINITELY no other anti-hystamines while on atarax. I have used neo-psenephrine spray with some success.

My new doctor just put me on Atarax, but I havent filled the prescription yet. He told me to start the Elmiron all over again and the Amitriptylene and then move on to the Atarax. I dont understand what a histamine can do for the bladder though and I am reluctant to take it. What exactly is the use of this medicine someone please!

Up above, when you scroll upwards, you'll see "PATIENT HANDBOOK" in blue letters. Click on it. Inside of the handbook, if you scroll down, on the left side they talk about hydroxyzine HCL (aka atarax). You can look in there and see what's written.
It has something to do with preventing histamines from irritating your bladder, if indeed you are creating histamines.

hmmmm? I've been taking claritin in the morning and hydroxyzine (25mg) in the evening. Did anyone's doc or pharmacist say why not to take both? My doc didn't mention it was a problem.
