Hi Everyone,

I have started to take Amitriptyline 25mg at night. I have noticed my frequency has shot through the roof no pain and no burning just frequency. Also I have not been sleeping well. I have been drinking water only 2 litres per day as usual and sticking to the diet strictly so the frequency is not from anything I have eaten. I the only new thing I have introduced is the medication.

Has anyone had this experience and if so how long does it last? Also how long does the medication take to kick in?

I took Amitriptyline for almost a year and I had the opposite of your problem. I was on 25mg 3x a day and found that I was unable to go. So they dropped me down to 2x a day and I was fine. Do you take any other meds? Like Ditropan XL? That can help with frequency too.

From my experience Amitiptyline took about a month or so for it to work. It differs from person to person. Although I did get a fair amount of relief the first few days (though it made me really tired).

I started on Elavil during the summer of 06 taking 10 mg. Nothing....then he upped it to 25...nothing..no help...then he upped it to 50...nothing...then at the end of Sept. he upped it to 75 mg. Bingo! From that point on I have had very little symptoms. I can eat everything and can function like a normal person. My depression is gone, and I can laugh again. Hang in there--the right dosage can work.

I was curious- you said now that you're taking 75mg of amitriptyline its working and you can eat most things. Are you on anything else? Do you get the bladder pain and spasms? I am currently on 100mg at bedtime. I want to decrease that as it seems like alot. Are you on pain med? Thanks. Glad you're feeling better

Actually, I know someone else that had the same frequency/urgency problem with Elavil, though it had rather been the pain that had bothered her before...
Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work for everyone...

I hope you're feeling better by now...

I am on Elavil also. I started with 10mg 3x a day. I couldn't stand feeling so tired during the day. So I started taking 10mg in the am and 20mg in the pm. It seem to help the frequency for about 2 months. Then I went into a flare. Started elmeron instill treatments and upped the Elavil to 10mg in the am and 30mg in the pm. That seemed to help again. After a couple of months the frequency seemed to increase again. It seems my body just gets use to things and stops working. I am going for botox in a few weeks. My doctor still wants me to continue with the Elavil with the botox. He said that the elavil helps the pelvic floor also. I hate taking it because it makes me so tired. This is one of the reasons I have a hard time to give up that one cup of coffee in the am.

I took amitriptyline 25 mg at night for 6 months and I didnt really help, but I did gain 15 pounds. I stopped taking it at night and take ambien instead.
