Hello All,
This happens almost everytime I eat a pear....the upper part of my vulva(not the opening)...but more like in between the inner and outter labia flares when I eat pears.
Does anyonelse have this? Would calcium citrate help with this?
thanks

Hmmm...I dunno. I thought pears were supposed to be one of the "safe" fruits for IC, but for V I don't know. I can eat pretty much all fruits, except canned, without problem, especially if accompanied by a protein, but I don't eat pears, just have never liked them. But I do get V flares from the same foods that irritate my bladder. If you don't want to give them up, try eating them not alone but with a glass of milk, cheese, or boiled egg or some other type of protein. When I started doing that I found that fruits rarely give me any problems, really none at all, even low acid OJ.
Also don't know about the calcium citrate...I've been taking it for years before I developed IC and V and still take it for the calcium, though it doesn't seem to have had any effect one way or another for my symptoms. But have heard that it helps some people. If nothing else, it's a good calcium supplement.

According to the VV Low Oxalate Diet, pears(Bartlett)are a medium oxalate food. I tried to place both the links to The Low Oxalate Diet and to The Vulvar Pain Foundation in this reply but was unable to manage it.
Calcium citrate is generally a supplement to the low oxalate diet. For more information, I recommend that you Google both sites listed above.

You have to PEEL the pears and then no V flare. The oxalate is mostly in the skin - but still, if I eat 2 whole peeled pears...I'll have a "baby" flare - which doesn't bother me. How to peel them? Get a carrot peeler - its not that hard.

Peel them pears...and have them with CHEESE - the calcium will help bind to the oxalate in the pears. Always eat oxalate with dairy - or a calcium supplement - I found that this made eating many things very possible. Pears can be baked too - and then the skin just slides right off - experiment - remember PEAR PIES? They have peeled pears in them and if you have IC - remember BARTLETT pears are the most acidic - I skip them altogether. Please let me know if it works for you. I ordered ONE pear pear bar from the IC store here...don't know if they use the whole pear or not / its a very concentrated pear - so might be high in oxalate - thought I'd give it a go - would be nice to have with a stick of mozzarella on the run.

That's sad, so many nutirents in the pear skin and we have to give that up too. Also, blueberries are IC friendly but high in oxalate! Sometimes I wonder if the IC diet also added up to my onset of VV.. so many of the IC friendly foods are high in oxalate! What is left to eat? The idea of having pear with some calcium is very good. I eat cheese or drink milk every day. I will ask my doctor to prescribe me calcium citrate. If I stick to the IC diet and oxalate diet together I'll end up with serious malnutrition.
We have to try to avoid that.
How exactly calcium citrate works? Do you take it only when you'll eat a high oxalate food?
How about pouring water "while" you are peeing? I ussually just pour water after I pee...
