View Full Version : Sharing Hysterical Holiday Moments

One of the best parts of the holidays are the silly things that happen... like carefully checking your christmas tree lights before you put them on the tree only to have the whole string go out as soon as you finish it. Toy mayhem, cookie chaos, family moments or merry, what I like the most about christmas is the laughter that it can create. :lmao:
In our family, for example, my mother HAS to watch the movie A Christmas Story atleast once.... and she always laughs hysterically whenever they show the seen of Ralphie's younger brother in his snow suit and crying "I can't put my arms down" because, as she says, that's exactly what used to happen to her little sister Mary back in the 1930's.
Ralphie is one cool kid but, honestly, his parents are a kick. I love the looks his mother gives his father when he tries to repair the leg lamp. Watch her in the background. She's hysterical! Dad does it too. The absolute puzzle that he shows when Ralphie comes down with his bunny suit, rolling his eyes and thinking "Only a woman would put a boy in a bunny suit" or something similar.
We have had our share of family holiday food disasters... including plastic liners from cheese found in Christmas Eve lasagna (I admit to that one. I didn't see that the sliced mozzarella had paper on both sides!), weevils in soup courtesy of my grandmothers failing eyes, my sis playing a joke on my brother by giving him an ice cream sundae that used Mayonnaise instead of whip cream. Yes, it took him several bites before he figured it out.
Gotta love some of the old family traditions too. My mother always makes Norwegian fruit soup and everyone groans. Only she and I will eat it. Dad threatens to make Lutefisk, this absolutely awful boiled fish dish that smells to high heaven though he hasn't fallen through on that recently. And, does anyone really like chocolate covered prunes or applets & cotlets? Uggh!
We also love to play games in our family on christmas day and after dinner and, well, that's a whole nother story. Suffice it to say that I was not happy when, after forking out $40 for a Survivor DVD game, I was the FIRST to be voted off the island by my evil opponents. Ooohhhh.... I was so frustrated while they laughed and laughed at me. This year, I have the Amazing Race DVD and am determined to outwit them all!
So, I'd like to hear your favorite holiday moments from this year! What has made you smile!
Jill
PS For those who are grieving this holiday season, we also send you our love during this first holiday without your loved one. I was talking with an ICN member earlier this week who shared that her grandmother had just died suddenly but that the family took great comfort in thinking that, for the first time in 30 years, their grandparents were together in heaven sharing their first christmas together in a long time. I like that image!

Just having my son home from college, and all of us decorating the tree, cutting up and having fun is what has made me smile so far. Plus, my son is in "love", and she's the best thing that's ever happened to him--girl wise. He was done so wrong by many girls in high school. I got a vision of things to come...engagements, weddings, grandbabies!
I'm sure I will have others before the holiday is done!
Thanks for this wonderful, uplifting thread!!

I would have to say one of my favorite hysterical holiday memories has to be the first time Lindsey saw Santa as a toddler(not the newborn Santa holding her but old enough to know who old Saint Nick was). Most kids freak and cry...not my munchkin...she didn't want to leave. Lindsey wanted to look at his glasses, under his beard, tried to pull his hat off and told the elf "bye-bye" when she came over and said "all done." Oh yeah and she posed for some priceless pictures which resulted in us buying the rip off mega package. By the time we extracted her from Santa's lap all of the shopping widowers on the benches were rolling, clapping which fueled Lindsey even more. Sooo...everytime we went to the mall for the rest of the season, we had to have an extra family member take her to the car and avoid that entire arm of the mall because she thought Santa was hers, she could jump the line and nobody else could have him.
Hugs,
Barb:lmao: :biglaugh: :biglaugh: :biglaugh:

My favorate party of the holiday thats funny and now has become a tradition in my family. Is that every Christmas my mom will buy underwear for everyone and we all have to show them too. My feancee his first Christmas got underwear and he was really imbarissed and later on asked me why he got them. So I said it was b/c my mom had no clue what to get you and she felt like making you part of them family. Then to top it all off I told him what til next Chritmas. He looked at me very funny and I started laughing b/c he didn't have to wait til next Christmas to find out anything b/c there wasn't anything to find out.
Another funny Christmas moment was when my baby sis recieved a presant from our oldest bro. She always hated frilly girly things so my bro but red underwear and he sewed on ruffles on to the butt. She open that gift and got beat red she then proceeded to put them on over her clothes and start dancing around in them. She wore them the whole day cause my bro made her.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all

I have to say our fondest memories are when my grandparents were alive.
When I wasa little girl, grandma had these light up elf heads lights, every year I stold one.. one year my grandma handed my mom a bag and saidgive these to Cindy, she's been stealingthem for years, there was 5 elf heads in the bag.. it took me 10 years to get 10 of them lol..
The Christmas off 88 I was deathly ill.. I was 200 miles from home at my grandparents house and all I wanted to do was come home. I was too sick to drive.. After hours of throwing up, the day after Christmas, I decided to rough the drive home.. I had finally hit the detroit border, sicker then ever I headed straight to ER... From a hospital room I called my Family to tell them I was 5weeks pregnant....
The next thing was the nightmare dinner... Grandpa got really sick and had to go to er, so Aunt Alta, Shannon and I made the potato salad, we decided to cheat and usethe food processer.. it tasted like sand :(
My nephew richie was a real pickle eater, and always ate them fast so no one else would get any.. he was about 4 or 5, he decided that he would take them home, he put themin a napkin, and put them in his suit case.. boy that smelled 2 days later..
last but not least, here at home, we had water frogs. One seemedto be missing. Wenever found it until we took down out christmas tree. there under the stand was a petafrid frog....
there are a lot of good memories... but these ones stick out

One Christmas my sister bought my granddaugter a Barbie doll and it came with a little bike that the doll goes on. My granddaughter, at the age about one, set the bike under her and tried to sit on the bike. We all laugh so hard. :lmao:
Kids do the funniest things and I will miss them this Christmas.

Now that our children are grown we like to do different things for Christmas. One year when our California kids couldn't make it for Christmas, we met half way in March --- at a Motel 6 in Weed, California! We had adjoining cabins and were given permission to be noisy if we wanted to since they had lots of vacancies and they gave us rooms away from others. Our Christmas tree was about 3 inches tall and we exchanged crazy gifts. For example, one son-in-law wanted a table saw --- my husband cut out a saw shape about 30" long, painted it to look like a saw, and put legs on it!

Every year my mother and grandmother made outfits for us. My younger sister and I always got the same outfit in different colors.
One year, my mom decided to make pajamas - red striped! She was so proud of them, she asked a neighbor to send her son over to take pictures. Well, I was 5 and in love with Jimmy. When mom said Jimmy was coming to take pictures of us in our pajamas I cried inconsolably. I did not want Jimmy to see me in pajamas. My older sister had me upstairs trying to cajole me to stop crying. She offered to put lipstick and make-up on me if I stopped. The pictures were hysterical.

Every year my Mum would make 'white christmas' (a confectionary) and every year she would find it in the fridge on Boxing Day. Even if someone would remember during the day, no one would say anyhting just to keep the tradition going.
As kids, after the presents were handed out on Christmas day, we would gather the wrapping paper and proceed into a hilarious paper fight! Although the six of us are all grown ( youngest brother is 50 and eldest 64) and have grown kids of our own ,and Mum and Dad have long since gone, Christmas day invariably ends up in a paper fight. Yes we still all get together to celebrate Christmas.

Jill tell your mom I will watch with her, I watch the 24 hours of a CHristmas story every year all day and all night.
My favorite CHristams stories is with my kids. We take deer hair and put it in the fron door to look like they got there tail stuck, make mess with oats all over the floor for them, leave notes from Santa, and mix up cocoa and cajun season and make deer dropping in the yard and have out GOldens walk all over the front yard in the snow to look li ke deer have been everywhere. IT makes there day every year.

I have two favorite memories that come right to mind. My mom bought my kids a trampoline over 10 years ago now. My step-dad and husband put it together and had it ready for my boys to see when they got up Christmas morning. We had the back window blinds closed until my mom and step-dad got there. When we opened up the back door for the kids to see their surprise, we saw that our black lab (2 years old) had chewed the padding off around the entire trampoline. The was blue vinyl and stuffing everywhere! I couldn't help it but laugh watching the dog running around and the kids getting on the trampoline. My mom could have killed my dog.
My other memory is that I always give my kids there underwear box every year. They are 20 and 23 now and now look forward to getting the underwear, t-shirts and socks to replenish their supply! The first year that my son brought home his girlfriend (now fiance') was 3 years ago. I had been wrapping presents late 1 night after I had taken my ambien. Obviously, I thought I was completely aware of what I was doing, but when poor Jessica opened up her first present, it had my son's underwear in it. She sweetly said "I don't think this present is for me". Most of the presents had the wrong tag on them. It was quite hysterical for everyone. This year, my presents are wrapped under the tree with coded tags on them. My sons are certain that I have had another ambien moment!!!
Merry Christmas to everyone!

I used to have a neighbor that made me fudge each year. I used to wonder what the heck she made it out of because it had such a strange taste. I always excepted the fudge with thanks and appreciation but promptly through it in the trash. One year I had the nerve to say "What wonderful fudge this is, you'll have to give me the recipe:, well she said the secret was she made it with velveeta cheese that's what made it so creamy. I was sick to my stomach just thinking about it. Who on earth would make chocolate fudge out of cheese. Anyway, I hope all of you have a wonderful holiday and I hope we'll all have a little reprieve from our pain and be able to enjoy it.
Best Wishes
Karen
