View Full Version : Colonoscopy Prep?

I've got a colonoscopy scheduled for next month. The prep contains these drugs: sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, and potassium chloride in the oral solution. Bisacodyl is in a time-release tablet.
I'm inclined to reschedule the procedure AFTER my bladder has had more time to heal. I've got a mild case of IC, but I sure don't want to push myself over the limit. Would you agree?
Thanks for you input.

Don't know about that, but when I had my colonoscopy I had 28 pills to take over a 4 hour period. It was much easier than drinking all that stuff.

Gosh! That's enough to make me gag. Hope things went well for you.

I suggest asking for a different prep. There are definatly preps that are more IC friendly!! I usually go with magnesium, drinking a lot, and or suppository....different doctors/hospitals have different ways of doing it and if you state that you won't be able to tollerate that they should be able to make adjustments for you!

Thanks, Katrina. I'll do that! I didn't think I'd be able to tolerate what they had planned. But didn't really think there's be options. Can't hurt to ask.

I drank the prep stuff --- it wasn't horrible, but not my favorite drink by far. I did spend several hours in the bathroom --- not a pleasant experience, but it didn't flare my IC.

I had the Fleet's Phosphosoda stuff, bleck. It was super salty - was a long time before I could stomach anything salty, lol. But as far as "prep" experiences go, it was much better than I expected, I had no cramping etc. (well, I had been so sick so the colitis acting up was much worse than the prep, lol) It was drink one of the little bottles (I think it was 3 oz, in 8oz of some kind of liquid) at a certain time in the evening, then the next dose was to be, I think 5 hours before the test.
I just looked up the ingredients and they are:sodium biphosphate and sodium phosphate. My bladder did well with it, I am happy to report, lol. But it's one to avoid if you have salt-sensitive health issues....

I had the fleet stuff, wasn't that bad, had to have 2 bottles (8 hours apart) spent alot of time in the bathroom. I also did pretty well with it, no problems with it at all.

You guys are GREAT! Thank you so much for your input. Those of you with experience are such a help to us without it. So grateful.
Thank you,

No problem! ;) I also know that Heather Van Vorous's site www.helpforibs.com I found a great tip sheet on prepping for the procedure! I believe it was a sticky at the top of the message boards, a huge help! Of course I can't find it right now... ugh.
Information like to stock the bathroom with lots and lots of magazines, I even had some nice relaxation candles going - lol, use Preperation H BEFORE anything gets started to help protect delicate skin (that really helped!), have baby wipes on hand for, well, you know, lol. Much kinder after awhile than regular TP (I bought a formula for sensitive skin, no perfumes etc)... I also followed the eating tips, to stop "solid" foods the day before, made the "clean out" eaiser, lol and lots and lots of Pedialyte was great. (Until it was time to stop all eating and drinking) I bought the plain stuff, no colors etc. Sure helped me to feel better while I was going through it, I didn't feel so dragged out...
Good luck! :)

The first one I gaged and threw up that gallon of stuff for about 4 hours. I promise, more came out my mouth than went in.
The next one I had that magensium citrate (over the counter...cheap). No problems with it. Sort of tasted like bad Sprite...but not that bad.

I just had a colonoscopy/endoscopy yesterday, actually. Not a good experience for me. The prep was horrible. I had to have 1.5oz phospho-soda at 4pm (mixed w/ 4oz of water/apple juice/soda), then repeat again at 7pm. I was able to get down the first dose, but within 90 minutes, it all came back up again. I guess it did work though, because I was in the bathroom on the toilet ALL NIGHT LONG!!! But it didn't interfere w/ the IC at all.
Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your replies -- and your support.
I'm not quite as worried about it now.
Merry Christmas!

I have to drink a bottle of Barium on the 27th for a CT scan of my kidneys. Do you think that will bother my bladder.

I had it done last year, and I too had the fleet Phosphosoda. I agree with Traceanne...it was soooo salty. I did gag a bit, but all and all, it wasn't that bad. I just did it like a shot LOL. I think you will be fine.
Good Luck.
