At the end of the year, the many MANY letters requesting donations arrive in the mail hoping that you'll consider making a donation. I thought I'd share my personal choices for donations:

(1) Donating to IC Research

The University of Maryland Medical School has made a tremendous contribution to our knowledge of IC, particularly the isolation of urine factors that appear to play a huge role in our condition. In addition, UM has conducted a number of studies into genetics and IC as well as risk factors to IC. If there is one research center and staff that can generate excitement at any research conference, it's the amazing research team at UM, led by Dr. Susan Keay and Dr. Jack Warren.

Checks should be made payable to "UMB Foundation, Inc" and the Memo line of the check should say "Interstitial Cystitis (or IC) Research" They should be mailed to:

(2) United Animal Nations

After the hurricane, I donated to several animal groups that I hadn't heard of before, one of which was United Animal Nations. Wow, am I impressed with their outreach and, best of all, extra funds for emergency treatment for animals that are rescued. I think they are worth checking out and also subscribing to their free email newsletter. (The Humane Society of America is driving me batty with weekly, annoying appeal letters! What a turn off!)

(3) National Antivivisection Society/International Foundation For Ethical Research

My educational roots are in pharmacology/drug development and I gave up that career in the early 80's after witnessing abominable animal research methods. I had one company tell me, clearly, that they used pets that had been turned into the pound as lost for their research... making no effort to find their owners. I still get incensed when I recall his saying "How do you feel about killing a dog that licks you in the face?"

Animal research is controversial, and yes, it has a place IF it is done with compassion, respect and dignity. But, much research is not done this way... and the NAS has been working, since the 1920's, to reverse this trend. They also have a sanctuary fund where animals used for research, such as chimpanzees, can be allowed to live out their lives in a kind, natural environment.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for this group and their work and strongly encourage becoming a member. They also have a book that will help you make better choices with the products you buy at home to make sure that you are not accidentally supporting cruel research methods.

Just my opinion... from the offices of the ICN where, out the window, I see bright sunshine despite the fact that we're having frost and freezing temperatures every single night! Brrr.... it's been cold!!
