I had my first cystoscopy today and it was unbelievably bad. The doc told me I have a very small urethra, and even the insertion of the first q-tip was exruciating. I cried throughout the proceedure and could barely get myself together for long enough afterwards to talk to the doctor. Both the nurse and the doctor seemed surprised by my reaction. Is this how it's supposed to be? I had the proceedure done because I have recurring UTIs or something like UTIs, but I was not in any discomfort before the cystoscopy. Now peeing is agony, and tears come to my eyes when I think about what I went through today. Honestly, I will never have this done to me again.

:welcome:
IC can attack the urethra and the trigone, which is probably why the insertion of the cystoscope was painful for you this time. This is quite normal and most ICers have a lot of pain when cystoscopes are inserted, which is why some uros will even put you to sleep while they do it if you have IC

Unfortunately, one of the things that happens when we are nervous about a procedure is that we become very tense and our muscles become very tight. I have had cystoscopies in the doctor's office and, while they definitely aren't fun, they aren't horrible either. I have learned that if I concentrate on breathing slowly and evenly and consciously relax my muscles, it really helps.
I'm so sorry you had an unpleasant experience.
Warm hugs,

I felt the same way when I had mine done. Please take care of yourself... I took Cystex after and It helped with the burning after the procedure, also if peeing is really horrible...(i know this sounds gross and weird) I filled the bathtub with warm water and sat in the tub and peed, it helped me alot.
Please remember you are not alone & take it easy...you deserve it...I hope you feel better
