OMG! I haven't had a flare that hurt this bad in a long time but i guess i did it to my self i felt a cold hitting me my throat is getting sore i'm coughing my head off chest feels raw all that good stuff banghead so i took some dayquil BIG MISTAKE cussing an half hour after i took it i have been flareing like you know what. eek I have took two perocet 10.325 and a heparin treatment i'm using a heating pad even tried ice and it want ease up gggggggrrrrrrrrrrr. banghead
What type of cold medicine can you take that want hit the bladder like a bomb?
Great question!!! I'm sorry you caught a cold, Rhonda.. Rats!! I want to know too what meds we can take! (As a teacher with 90 students, I'm constantly exposed), I've washed my hands so much lately, my skin is cracking:( eek
Thought I was getting one the other night. Drank a big glass of Lizard Blizzard (Sobe drink with vitamin C, echinacea, & zinc)* & ate a giant steamed bunch of broccoli, took the hottest shower I could stand & went to bed 2 hours early. I think it worked...
A couple of non-medicine tips: there's a Vapor Bath for babies that's pretty good (I use it in shower), Bath & Body Works makes a Eucalyptus & Spearmint Body Oil, you can also get Breathe-Right Nasal strips with menthol in them. And there's always good ol' Vicks (I saw a commercial for Vicks in a special container to concentrate the fumes near your nose!)
*By the way, I don't know why, but Lizard Blizzard was listed on the ICA site as a fairly bladder friendly drink. Maybe because there's nonfat milk in it to mellow out the vitamin C??? Have no idea, but tested it out first at 1/4 strength, then 1/2 strength, then full strength, increasing total amounts too & no problem...
Hope you feel better soon!! kissing

Hope you feel better soon Rhonda. Keep an eye on that sore throat. my sore throat turned into the flu on top of it.

I use Chlor Trimeton --- in its generic form. Very inexpensive and doesn't irritate my IC.

I use Robitussin DM for coughs, but I can't handle any decongestants or I am in a huge flare. I hope you are feeling better soon.

The only two things I use for a cold or flu are Tylenol and Vicks vapo rub. I'm allergic to Sudafed. And I used to use Nyquil before IC. I loved how much better it made me feel but now I don't. I'm afraid it would irritate. I actually do pretty well with just those two -Tylenol and Vicks. Of course lots of sleep helps too.

I know what you mean about flaring with cold medicines. Did it have an decongestant in it? Those are the worst. Sorry I don't have suggestions as to what to use.
Diana.
Hi Rhonda, sorry to hear you are having a really bad flare up, and going through a cold and sore throat, no fun at all. I know I used just Robitussin DM when I had a bad cold few weeks ago, and it helped, did not cause a flare. Cannot take any of the cold meds with pseudophenhydramine (think thats how its spelt) in them, bad news for bladder. Hope you can get relief for yours, take care, keep us posted, and stay warm, love and hugs Iris. kissing grouphug

Hi Rhonda,
I hope you are feeling better, I hate having a cold, the "stuffy nose" just drives me crazy...my family and I have used Zicam nasal spray recently when we felt a cold coming on. It is sold over the counter with the cold meds. You are supposed to spray it in the nostrils right when you first notice the cold symptoms, and frequently thereafter, it comes with an instruction booklet. It is supposed to decrease the length and severity of the cold...hubby and I have both used it, and while it does not treat the cold itself, I do have to say both of us felt much better within 2 days. You might ask your Dr. and Pharmacist about it. I did not have any side effects from it as far as my ic, but I don't know if it can affect it or not...I also take children's Benadryl (the generic of it, it is cheaper :) ) and it helps, I cannot take the adult strength, it just makes me too sleepy.
Take care,

Hi Rhonda:
I have noticed that medicines and nutritional supplements containing acids like "stearic acid", "pantothenic acid", etc. always irritate my bladder. When I go shopping, I read the labels to make sure there are no acids of any kind. So far I find Contact Non-Drowsy to be helpful for colds, and it seems to agree with my bladder. I also use Zicam spray, Echinachia and Goldenseal Root. Regularly, I take Ester-C, the non-acidic form of Vitamin C.
Take care and get well soon! angel
