I am scheduled to get a nerve block done in about 2 weeks... and am TERRIFIED about it. I hear they put in an iv, so I was wondering if they give you anything to relax you or anything. And I am also wondering if it hurt after the procedure, like later that day and the day after?

This procedure is not bad at all. I have had 9 total and never had a problem. They do put in an IV. I was out for all of them. The first set they told me I was given something so I would not remember it. Well, I don't so it worked. The second set I was in the hospital and put out.
I did not have pain afterwards. Maybe a little stiff but that's it. If they work you might feel it right away. So, you would have less pain.
Call the doctor for more information. It really was not something that you need to worry about.

I agree with Ginny! I've received few complaints from patients who have had nerve blocks. They found it one of the easier procedures to have overall! Definitely bring your fears or concerns up with your doc! He or she should be able to resolve them quickly!

I was told by my doctor that I will not be put out for it, so that just makes me scared of the pain since I will be awake.

Hi Rebeccanne,
I'm not sure what type of block your having, but I had a superior hypogastric plexus nerve block. My doctor told me he gives some patients sedation, but not too many. I did it with no anesthesia, and no sedation. It was uncomfortable, and really hurt bad that first day, but after that it was pretty much just my regular pain.
It is doable, but if I had to do it over again, I would probably ask for sedation. You should ask your doc about it and explain your fears. Maybe he means no anesthesia, but sedation?? Best to get it clear with him.
Good Luck with it, I hope it will be successful for you. It DOES help some people!
