How long have you been on the patch? It takes a week or so before the patch is even effective for pain so breakthrough pain at that point would just be considered regular pain. It took about two weeks and an dosage change before I noticed full pain relief and my breakthrough pain would come around every few months.

You have only been on it one day Sheila. You can't expect it to work properly yet. You need to have some patience even though I know it's hard.

i could tell a it was starting to work after about eight to twelve hours, but they are right you don't get the full effect of the patch for a while. I would say a few days. I guess it really depends on the person, their pain issues, and the Mg their on.
hope this helps, and hope those nasty side effects goes away quickly!

I went back to my new endodontist this afternoon because my tooth was throbbing like crazy.(I had dental surgery last Monday). I had taken my regular pain meds (for the I.C.), plus 4 Ibuprofen and expected the pain would go away. The meds didn't do anything! I had surgery last Monday to remove the remainder of an infection which my prior endo didn't see when I had the root canal. My new endodontist did a cold sensitivity test just an hour ago and I almost flew off the chair! It's another tooth that's gone 'bad'. The other one is fine. I started crying. (I hate that!) It's been 1 hour since, I've taken more pain medication and it still hurts! I can't deal with this anymore! He gave me a script for Vicoprofen to take until the upcoming root canal (a great present for the holidays!). I don't know what to do re: calling my pain dr..
Before I had the gum surgery, I called her to let my pain dr. know about the surgery, the nurse called and said I could take whatever he prescribed, which was Penicillen and Vicoprofen (12). I need the extra medicine he prescribed today because of the new bad tooth, but do I need to call my pain Dr. again? I'm pretty strict about when and why I take my medications. If I'm flaring and hurting, I take a Lortab, if I'm not that bad, I wait a while. Do I call to let my pain dr. know I'm taking Vicoprofen a.s.a.p., or wait until my appt. on Friday? I'm in pain and confused! HELP!!
