I have been doing pretty well on 20mg of Elavil. My uro started me on 25mg Hydroxine and the first morning after taking it the night before I was worse. Same thing the next day so I quit taking it. Anybody else experience this?

What do you mean you felt worse? If you felt very tired and out of it, that is the usual side effect when Atarax is started, or did you mean something else?

Do you typically take pain medications as well?>Meemer

Lonedog, my bladder used to respond terribly to all antihistamines and most pain meds and most IC meds. :( My bladder always got so much worse on Hydroxisine. My urogyn at that time said he did see that sensitivity in a minority of IC cases - it's not unheard of - and he said when the patient is sensitive to some meds, they are almost always sensitive to them all....it's just some variant of IC.
Anyway, most people don't get worse on those meds, so they will be very confused by your post, since those meds help rather than hurt their bladder, but a few of us (me especially) understand exactly what you are talking about, and we've been there.
Blessings,

I am curious of how you felt that made you feel worse when you took the hydroxyzine. I am trying to figure out if it is the culprit in a recent flare(whatever that is to us), mine is more of the crampy, achy back pain. I am starting to think the back pain is the actual way I feel the bladder aching. Any way those symptoms have progressively gotten worse since starting the hydroxyzine, I don't know if this is a coincidence or if it is the meds. This is what I think is so frustrating about this disease, finding out what is causing the pain, the origins are so different for so many. I took hydro for about a week and thought maybe I had over did during Thanksgiving(but I was careful not to eat any culprit foods) so unless the stress started it, then it started about 2 to 3 days after starting hydroxyzine and gradually got worse after adding the second dose around day 5. I continued to take two doses for three days until I stopped to realize it might be the meds. I stopped them today, I had physical therapy for the first time in two weeks today too so I am feeling some better. I don't know what to think but I guess I will need some time to figure this out too. Any recommendations, do you think I should try it again in a couple of days? -

I took the first 25mg capsule of Hydroxyzine at bed time and was really hurting the next morning. I took it a second night and the pain got worse. Pelvic pain, back pain, cramping etc. I have been taking Elavil for about 8 weeks and getting good results from it. I started Elmiron a couple of weeks ago and started hurting but I was also on antibiotics. Since stopping the antibiotics I have restarted the Elmiron and so far so good. I will try the Hydroxyzine again in a couple of weeks. Since it seems to help some people especially those with bad allergies like myself I want to give it another try. My uro was hoping it would keep me from getting seasonal allergy flares. If you have allergies it might be worth another try. I would wait until everything settles down and then try it.

Thanks for the reply. I still haven't been able to get my symptoms under control which has been an issue ever since I had my last surgery. I am consistently having flares and am only having a day here and there break from the pain. Anyway it makes it hard to tell if something new is working or making things worse. The only thing that is currently helping for sure is therapy but I think it wears off or the pain kicks the symptoms back in not long afterwards. I go back to the dr next week so I'll have to discuss it with him.
