I'll be riding in a car 8 hours to get to my class reunion in a couple of weeks. I'm wondering how the Travel John works. Actually, I'm wondering what it looks like and what the, ummmm, logistics of using it are when one is on the road and unable to stop. (Read: Suddenly can't make it til the next town.)
Does anybody have any experience with this that they'd be willing to share?
Thanks loads,
Alleycat

Hi, Alison!
What a coincidence! I'm from East Texas, too--Carthage. We're having the whole decade of the 60's at this Reunion. (I graduated in '65, so our 35th was in 2000.)
I see you're traveling from Kansas. Where in East Texas are you from? I live in South Texas--about half an hour south of San Antonio. Hard to find anybody out here in the boonies who knows anything about IC. Ya know what I mean?
Great to hear from you. Hope I get some info about the Travel John. I just can't quite picture how it goes......

I'm not terribly good at descriptions, but will give it a try. The travel john itself has a small plastic oblong (about 1 1/2 inches by maybe 4 inches) --- it's curved to fit so you can hold it against yourself and you can urinate without it running all over. It has a plastic bag attached, which contains a substance that absorbs the liquid and also contains a deodorant.
It wouldn't be possible to use it while actually driving, but one could stop beside the road long enough to use it. I would advise two things --- #1 is to try one at home; or at least examine it so you understand how it works. I found I feel more comfortable about it since I did try one. I even went into the shower to try it just to be sure --- and it worked very well for me with no mess. You will want to have a small tissue available to use afterwards. You can put it in the bag too.
Secondly, I would advise wearing a skirt or dress so it will be easier to use.
Good luck! And have a wonderful time at your reunion.
Hugs,
Donna

Donna, I must take issue with your first statement: you ARE VERY good with descriptions!! smile.gif You've given me a really clear picture of how this works. (I just wish I'd had it when we were traveling through the West Texas and New Mexico badlands earlier in the year. Having one of these travel aids would certainly have beat squatting behind the pickup seat, trying to hit a DQ cup!!)
And, yep, I'll be wearing a skirt. biggrin.gif
Thanks SO much for your help.

Wow Sweetie~
What a small world. I know where Carthage is at. Im from Lufkin. Moved up here to Kansas cause hubby got stationed here in the AirForce. Actually Im from Hudson but close to Lufkin cause everyone knows Lufkin. Did you move to South TX for a job ..etc ? Well thats cool that were from close towns. I hope you have a good outcome on your travel john. Best wishes~
Take care and stay safe

Hey, girls! I'm thinking of buying the Travel John myself. I live in North Texas(McKinney) and travel to Mississippi to visit my folks quite often. It takes around nine hours and I have a three yr. old and a four yr. old. I usually travel alone w/ them b/c my hubby works a lot and can't get off much. Anyway, I always carry their portable potty seat just in case. I've been known to use it in the past, but it's a MESS. It's not really made for us big people, ya know? Picture me sitting on a Sesame Street potty seat in the back seat. Haha. Donna, would the travel john work better than that? I am thinking it probably would! Besides, I may have a little more dignity using one built for ME!
Sweetie, have fun at your reunion and have a SAFE trip!

The great thing about the travel john is that you can use it standing up. And all the liquid is in the bag, but absorbed so you don't realize there's liquid in there. You can use it several times --- then drop it in a trash can so no mess.

This Travel John sounds like the best invention since the toilet. wink.gif
I wish I had a few just this past week. My husband had a conference in Fort Lauderdale, Fl. and wanted to take a few days vacation afterwards at Amelia Island, Fl. Therefore, I went along with him. The days he was in the conference was really a bore for me as I just hung out in the hotel room most of the time.
After the conference, we drove up to Amelia Island and had a wonderful 5 days at the beach. I had a great time with my man just goofing off. Thank God the IC did not rear up its unly head.
Anyway, one of the things I hate about traveling is trying to find a bathroom when I need it. How great it would be to be able to travel with your own toilet tucked neatly in your purse. I must definitely look into getting some. They just might take the dread of traveling away that I always feel. It would also be great to be able to pee standing up cool.gif instead of feeling like I need to sterilize the place before I sit down. rolleyes.gif
Anyway, I hope everyone has a great weekend...Sharon biggrin.gif
Hi
Well I used my travel john. Let me tell you it was worth the investment. I had flown to my destination on my vacation, got motion sickness, so my good hubby drove us back. 10 Hrs!!!of driving. What I did was I went into the back seat, pushed the front seat up as far as it could go, than I scooted my butt to the edge of the seat and than I put the funnel, I guess you would call itthat, right next to me down below,I think the larger part of it goes into the front. And I just went.. Of course I cover myself up with a little blanket. Also had toilet paper. They hold 600 cc.So since I only had 2 left, before we drove back, I bought a big tupperware container, so after each use I would put the travel john in there. So I used it more than once, because I could not find anymore of thenm in South Carolina. With IC you have to be creative, I guess.-JOJO
