I was just wondering if it was normal for persons with IC to leak. I’ve had this problem for months now (I’ve been diagnosed for about 6 months or so) but I didn’t know if this was normal or not. I have to wear panty liners because I don’t even realize that I am leaking. I wanted to say something to my doctor but I still have a hard time talking about IC in general and I just want to get out of there as soon as possible. I should have asked this question to you all a long time ago but ah well. But here it is, let me know if this is normal for icers or if there is something else I should be worried about?

I would not say it is normal to leak--Ileak quite a bit without knowing but also have a prolapsed bladder.

I would discuss this with your doc.

thanks for the replies. I suppose i should talk to my doctor about this, its just that everyone I go in I freeze up or cry, etc so I end up not asking anything. Last time I even made a list of things I wanted to ask but then I chickened out. Also what is prolapsed bladder?

A prolapsed bladder is a bladder that has dropped as a result of the relaxation or damage to the pelvic muscles and ligaments. It occurs quite often like me after childbirth.

Leaking is not usually caused by IC. You really should talk with your doctor about it.

Since most of my IC discomfort seems to be in my urethra (spasms), I continually feel like I'm going to leak just a little bit of urine, and have come close many times.

I leaked and it for me it was a problem with my detrusor muscle. Do mention it even if it hard to do. It may end up being something simple that can be fixed, but you wont know unless you ask and then the doctor will take it from there. Keep us posted, okay? Judith

I have had minor leaking issues for about the past year or two. I think that I actually didn't think much of it until this post. Sometimes I just suddenly discover that I am wet and never had the sensation of going. It is never much, I wear pantyliners most days just in case. I know if I sneeze or cough real hard I will leak a little, but I am talking about leaking when I don't even feel it. I don't really know if it is normal or not and I probably won't be running to the doctor to find out anytime real soon. I will however mention it the next time I find myself there.

I too have this problem and have discussed it with my doctor. I just havent been able to get any answers. Sometimes its just a small amount and other times I get flows of it. I have been trying to figure this out for years.

I would have to say i leak all the time. It is very bothersome. I tired over active bladder medicine but it make me have retention....so no more of that. I really dont know what to do about it. I didn't even think there was anything you can do about it. I can't wait to see what others have to say. Thank you for bring this subject up! sending lots of hugs

Leaking is a situation that can probably be fixed, one way or another. If it doesn't affect the quality of your life, the cure might not be worth it to you. It was affecting the quality of my life. That is why I see a urogynecologist. He is trained in both gynecology and urology. There was a solution for me.

I would also say it is normal to leak. I do on occasion. It could be due to weak pelvic muscles. I would take to your doctor about it.

I actually had this same problem for a few years that started off as a once in a while thing then just got worse. Mr drs said it was uncommon but my bladder would empty without warning about 10+ x a day so I had to wear diapers/pads. We did rule out many other reasons but I didnt have stress incontinence or pelvic floor issues that were causing it. I am 35 and mine actually stopped when I had my last ovary removed...via c-sec cut...they cleaned up endo & adhesions on and around my bladder, bowel, and ovary. Now its gone. Makes you wonder. I would however say check your options first....I would not redo the hyst. Good luck

Hey, I just wanted to give an update that my dr. and he said that it was "normal" for ICers to leak, since we tend to hold our bladder trying to get to the bathroom and that since we can't hold very much, or at least I sure cant, that leaking can occur. He said not to worry about it too much. I think that if when, although now it seems like it never will, I start to feel better and am still leaking, I will bring it up again. So anyway, ICers, if you are leaking, don't worry too much, but do be sure to bring it up with your dr. just to be safe!!

I have a major leaking problem due to MS. IC seems to be making it worse, though. Neurological disorders can be a cause. Have you been checked out for anything other than IC ?

no I haven;t, my uro just said it happens since my bladder is trying to hold so much that it just can't. I can express more concern the next time I see him though.

I am not sure whether the leaking is normal, either. You should probably consult another doctor. I don't think that the leaking is caused by IC, but I know that there are a lot of good meds
