Omnicef for sinus infection

I had the worst cold last week that kept me home in bed. I could barely get off the couch. I wouldn't go to the dr because I was sure it was viral and had to run it's course. A week later ...when I thought I was finally getting better it took a turn for the worse. I had pain in my cheek, some swelling and pressure and my upper teeth started to hurt. I felt totally congested again. It felt like something was squeezing in mhy sinuses. I made it to the dr today....after steaming and lots of hot showers all week. The dr told me I had a secondary sinus infection. Yes it WAS viral....but now because the sinuses couldn't drain....it became infected. So here I am on antibiotics....something I haven't had to do for sinuses in a very long time! Other than the 5 day course of macrobid for a UTI last month I have avoided any antibiotics for over a year and probably a year before that! I took the Omnicef cautiously because I react to so many antibiotics. I am doing pretty good in so far as side effects....which is a plus but wound up getting bladder pain about an hour and half after taking it. The only thing that I can think of is that the blue dye of capsule must be flaring my bladder. Has anyone else tried this antibiotic? Any problems with it? I was thinking that I should take the medication out of the capsule and put it in a plain clear gelatin capsule. Has anyone ever done that? I don't think it should do anything to the effect of the antibiotic. I don't think I can continue taking it if it is going to cause me such bladder pain but I don't want to give up on it because it is NOT causing me dizziness or any of the other horrible side effects that other antibiotics have done in the past. Also, I need to get my sinus infection under control! This feels like the cold that never ends!!!! It's making me :loco: !!!!!

OK...I took the medication out of the capsule and put it in a clear gelatin capsule. An hour or two later I started to feel more pain in my bladder. Not as bad as yesterday though...so I'm thinking the gelatin capsule helped but I am getting bladder pain from the medication itself. Anyone else have any experience with this medication?

Now Omnicef is not an antibiotic that I know but I would appreciate it if you update that thread with how it goes for you. Very sorry that this med isn't going well for you but glad you found a way to lesson it a bit.

Man I was flaring horribly from a cold itself...I really feel for you having that plus a med that doesn't agree with your bladder!!!! Hope you feel better soon!!!!!!!!! :grouphug:

Thanks Katrina. I did something really stupid.....I didn't take the antibioitcs for a day to give my bladder a break. I was also stuck at the hospital with hubby so it was a good excuse not to take it. Anway, by last night the pain the pain and fullness in the right sinus was returning. I did a nasal lavage and sure enough it allowed me to blow my nose and DRAIN!!!...What I saw was scary! I haven't had this bad of a sinus infection in years! It was entirely green and just kept coming! Needless to say, at around midnight I started up with the antibiotic (out of the capsule) and went to sleep (with the help of an ativan). I have some pain...or irritation...I know something is not right and it is hurting .I called my dr, who is so compassionate and explained what I did. he said it was a good idea to take it out of the capsule but said if I wanted to try anything else ...it would be hit or miss. He offered to call the pharmacy. I had a 3 day RX of Zithromax 500mg. It is supposed to stay is your system for 10 day. He said it would be OK to give that a try. I think I will try that now with lunch. The way I figured it is that if I have to be in pain then maybe 3 doses would do it...I am afraid of the pink dye but at least I wouldn't have to take a pill for 10 days. I am not sure about anything anymore but I think I will give this a try.
The Omnicef is a cephalosporin in a two tone blue capsule. The weird thing is that only one sinus (right) is infected.The dr says that can happen especially since that was the one that was totally clogged when I had my cold. OH well................thanks for answering my post. I know you hve a lot of experience with antibiotics.
OH.....only 2 days on it...and the yeast was already burning the heck out of me! I'm now taking a small dose of Nystatin (oral powder) and Nystating Vag tablets and of course probiotics. Something has got to give!!!!!!!!!!:help:

((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))) I haven't been feeling very good at all myself....I can tell my mouth has an oral thrush, I know my husband and I have something and both have had if for it awhile. It has affected my bladder and my digestive track and whole body was hurting yesterday...times like this help me to remember that sometimes all the info in the world isn't enough. That said we shall fight with all we have right? Are you doing anything besides an antibiotic? I am hoping that Garlic will help fight whatever is driving me nuts along with added plusses of yeast! I know I have to be careful with Garlic since my IBS doesn't love it so I have to make sure I take an antispasmodic with it...but it is usually worth it. I hope we both feel a lot better very soon!! :grouphug:

I hope by now you are feeling better. For some reason I haven't been getting all the emails to the threads that I am subscribed and I didn't get this one....hhhhhhhhmmmmm.
I never went on the Zithromax but I did continue on the Omnicef. What I did was take it out of the capsule and then put it in the clear gelatin caps...but.........I did half the dose. Not sure if it was the right thing to do because I know that yo need a certain amount to kill the bacteria. Anyway, I continued it on that way till yesterday when I took my second dose on an empty stomach (about an hour an a half after dinner) and then the pain hit. I think I was starting to get side effects from the medication but seemed to be able to handle it. I was so sick yesterday after taking it that I wasn't able to take any today and am actually home resting. I thought I was getting a cold or bug again but maybe it's just the flu-like symptoms as a side effect fromt he antibiotic. I just don't know anymore. I have had horrible side effects from meds that land me in bed for days so it IS possible. At this point I don't want to go back on them but I'm not sure if I took enough to kill the infection (probably not).I think I took a total of 5 days and that's with taking a day off in between at the beginning because the full dose made me sick. I am embarrased to call the dr again......and am so weak an dizzy right now I can't get off the couch My stomach is shot!...pain, rumbling, gas, loose stools.........oh boy....it just doesn't end. I don't want to ruin my thanksgiving :(. sorry for te long venting....I'm sure you know how it feels and am sorry that you too are having a rough time. How do you do it with so much going on with your health.
I hope the garlic helped you. I can't take garlic. It destroys me.
Gotta check the control panel to make sure I get my emails....

I can't say I am doing much better.....I am convinced that some type of bug is in my husband and I more serious than a cold not exactly an allergy and I suspect I may be doing better than he because of all that I am doing with antibiotics, vitamins, and Garlic....I know I past sick of being sick. On my bad days many things are flaring and it sounds similar to what your going through. I tell I am just use to a lot of it....so little changes like having everything i need by me in bed....jouraling, coloring, whatever it takes to lesson the stress of it......and herbs and things along with a huge list of presciptions. The thing I can't treat much at all is the fatigue...

At one time many people were not getting all the notifications of subsciptions that they should but I thought that was over.

I was able to adjust a setting in my options. I don't know how the email notification was changed on me but I corrected it now and got this email notification....no problem.
I sure do hope that you start to feel better. We need to do whatever we can to get through these awful days. I did a jigsaw puzzle last week which I found distracting and started another one this morning. I do as much as I can and then take a break. I hope that this horrible feeling will be better tomorrow. I know a lot of it is my reaction to the antibiotic. I just hope that my sinuses don't act up again and then need to start looking for another antibiotic to clear it up in the middle of this holiday weekend. I have my niece's 21st birthday party saturday night and then a wedding on Sunday. Its just too much all at once especially when you're not feeling well.
Hang in there........I pray that we both get through this quickly.
