Hey everyone. I was just wondering if anyone has any idea if Dramamine, the motion sickness med, will cause a flare. I just got a presciption for my upcoming cruise, but now I'm wondering if it will cause me to flare. Anyone ever taken it? Some cold/allergy meds make me flare, but I'm not really sure what's in Dramamine. Any advice would be helpful. Don't know which would be worse, sea sickness or a flare while on a boat for 5 days:confused: . Thanks!!!!!!!!

Hi, meme.

I took dramamine before, and didn't have any IC effects from it, but i'm not that sensitive to medicines. Dramamine will knock you out, and make you really drowsy. Some people feel worse from the side effects than from the seasickness. You'll be glad to hear that most people feel a bit seasick for the first day or two, but feel fine after that. And that's without medicine.

You say you're going on a cruise--I'm assuming it's a giant boat, and it will probably have stabilizers so it shouldn't rock around too much. If you're feeling seasick, It's helpful to be out on the deck as much as possible, and look at the horizon or land. Also: don't read. Make sure that your stomach isn't empty--an empty stomach can make you feel more queasy. If you have problems eating, you can always revert to the saltines diet. I've heard ginger in any form is supposed to help. I've also heard of people having success with sucking on lemon wedges (which is way too acidic, i know).

I've spent about 2 months total on research boats since I've started my master's degree last year (environmental engineering). I was really worried I would flare up on the boat, but I was fine. I made sure to take a cysta-q every day, and took my prelief with every meal. I felt seasick the first ~24 hours I was on the boat, but after that, I felt okay, as long as I didn't spend too much time working in front of the computer or reading. And this was on a boat that got tossed around a lot. Personally, I would rather feel seasick than have a flare, but that's because I know how my body reacts to boats.

Thanks for the advice. Have you ever tried SeaBands? I've heard about those too, and since they're not a medication, thought it might do some good to try them. I don't get seasick on small boats, my husband an I have a 19' SeaRay. It doesn't bother me at all unless we go too fast and big boats go like, what 19mph or something like that I read. Not really sure if you can tell by one that the other won't make you sick. Thanks again for the info!

Meme, dramamine also made me drowsy. My cousin takes ginger root (ginger something) and she said it works. I never tried it before. And I don't know if it is IC friendly or not. I hope you find something that will work for you so you can enjoy your trip. I also heard the big boats aren't to bad. My brother's husband swear to it that the big boat you can't feel it.

Hugs, Trishann

The meds I got are the Dramamine patches that you put behind your ear. Anyone tried these? Not to worried about the seasickness, just want to be prepared. Thanks for the input.
