I have been reading about the problems I have been having with diarrhea since my gallbladder removal in Sept. of last year. It took a while but I finally figured out that I have bile salt malabsorption going on. I went to the doctor who confirmed this and gave me Colestid for the problem. I have also read where others are taking Colestid for IBS-D and have not had the gallbladder removed. I have recently (last few days) had stomach pain and was wondering if this might be a side effect of the Colestid or what. In my research I ran across another forum site that has some major discussions about how Calcium carbonate helps with both pre and post operative gallbladder diarrhea problems. I don't know if I can post a URL for another site or not so I will do that at the end. I do however want to say that they mention specifically Caltrate 600 Plus or other brand that has same basic ingredients not to exceed the 40 mg of Magnesium (causes diarrhea). I am willing to give it a try because I would most definately be willing to be on a Calcium supplement that I already need than a prescription that can block vitamin absorption and who knows what other harmful effect. Just wanted to throw this out there for anyone looking for help but not necessarily another prescription. If the link is not posted feel free to email me at plaedes@bellsouth.net (if you email me please mention the ICN in the subject heading or it may get deleted) or PM me and I will be happy to send along the information.
Here is the link for the forum I found this on: http://ibsgroup.org/groupee/forums/a/tpc/f/72310261/m/479104561

Well, I'm not sure if anyone else has read about this and tried it yet or not. So far I have tried it and I am not hopeful. I will keep it up for a while longer...I need the Calcium anyway. Just wanted to mention that so far for me it has not helped yet.

If you don't get enough water calcium can certainly thicken stools but with IBS that is often not the biggest problem....spasms are the bigger problem. That stomach pain could be IBS too.

Have you tried the antispasmodics like peppermint that are for sale at ICN store for IBS?
