View Full Version : Holding back from voiding...

Not sure if this is the right place to post this... sorry if I'm in the wrong forum...
BUT, I have a question nonetheless...
I am so paranoid about going to the bathroom too much that I am holding my urine in. If I went whenever I "felt I had to", I would be sitting on the toilet all the time. I find I can hold in my urine and go around six times a day. I sleep through the night (I take sleeping pills) and go in the morning when I wake up. However, just now.. I held my urine in from about 6:30pm -11pm. When I went, my urine felt very concentrated and it burned more. Maybe holding urine in isn't a good idea? On the one hand, I don't want to irritate my urethra by constantly going and "dribbling" (sorry... that's gross sounding...) but on the other hand... holding it in makes the urine more painful for me?
Do any of you hold in your urine intentionally? What is the best strategy?
Hope everybody is doing well...
Caroline.

It could be that it was stinging if the urine is too concentrated hence the burning.
I don't think there is anything wrong with going 6x a day - i think it is if you go like twice a day or something that it could cause irritation.
You should see a doctor- you can have IC and not have frequency but still have the urge.

Yow! Even if you don't have IC you should never hold in your urine....go, go, go. Just for the reason you have stated....it makes it more concentrated and you can end up with a UTI or bladder infection.
It sort of sounds like your situation is kind of a 2-part thing: you have a bit of retention, plus you are able to hold it, that and your meds help numb things so you can hold onto easier than let go of it.
I would talk to your uro and let them know....jsut in case. I personally wouldn't want to eventually end up cathing if I didn't have to.
I can't hold it....hwne I have to go ....it's MADDENING!
Good luck! :)

If you're not drinking enough water, it can make the urine concentrated and irritating --- you need to drink six to eight cups of water every day. I find I do best if I take small drinks frequently.
I don't think it's a good idea to avoid going to the bathroom more than fifteen to twenty minutes when you really feel you need to go. It's something I suggest you discuss with your doctor.

ah, I thought she meant she had an urge or pressure to go when her bladder isn't full hence I suggested the bladder diary
But yep best to see a doctor about it

The theory about holding your urine is crazy. Holding it will cause aches, pains, more pressure, burning, spasms, and etc.
I know our urine is mess up. If I don't drink enough water, my urine will burn and causes more trips to the restroom with little result, the pressure is more. The spasms goes crazy. Yes I still have to urinate alot by drinking water but you do not have the extreme burning and pain as much.
Theories, comes and goes. You have to do what you think is best for you.
Through my years, I have seen theories that were completely wrong. Guess who suffer for it?

Isn't it very painful to hold it in? Do you have an urgency feeling when you are holding it?
I'm trying to retrain my bladder somewhat so first I was trying to go every 3 hrs which I hear is "normal" but it would get too painful/achy to hold it and after it would ache quite a bit so I changed it to two hours which is working ok - you just have to plan your trips going out, etc.
I went to a long play on Sunday and you know during a play (unlike a movie) you just can't get up and go to the bathroom whenever you want to - one reason I don't like going to them.
I heard you can mess up your kidneys by holding your urine in for extended periods.
