Is it true that patients with I.C. are more immune to colds or sickness???

Lots of questions today lol :P

I never get colds, never have done.

I am susceptible to bacterial infections though due to long term neutropaenia (low, abnormal shaped, white blood cells that fight bacterial infection).

This is good for my Chron's disease as the lower my neutrophil count the less flared my Chron's is.

Maybe there is a connection with the white cells that fight viral infections and this helps those with IC

hi

yes I believe IC patients are more immune to any type of infection as it impairs the immune system. my urol told me this and said that if you body is fighting pain, inflamation etc it dampens the immune system meaning we are more prone to pick up colds etc.

As if we dont have enough to worry about :-)

I am much more suspectable to colds and flu since I have had IC. However, I didnt know if it was IC related or not, since I also have Lupus. I will also be curious to see how others respond to this. Thanks for asking! Hugs, Amy

Personally I am getting sick almost constantly since being diagnosed with IC and having to stop fruit and juice and my multi vitamins and vitamin C supplements. I am catching colds that just lead into another cold and of course my IC starts to flare when I am sick! It's a vicous cycle for me!
I have always been more suceptable to colds and viruses anyways, so maybe it is only related to the IC because I am on the diet and stopped taking the supplements I mentioned that usually keep me healthy through the cold winters here in NY!

I haven't had a cold in a while now. I have had some sinus trouble but that has been with me my whole life. I am quite surprised I haven't gotten more colds since I am always usually run down and estremely tired. Maybe my body is finally having mercy on me and figures since I already feel crappy it will keep the cold away!!

I haven't been sick with colds or flu in quite some time (probably about 18months or so)

I haven't had one single cold or flu in the six years I've had IC. I used to get colds/flu pretty regularly before that.

Blessings,

I hadn't been sick with a cold for a while, but this month it just hit. I've been sick for a week and a half (during Thanksgiving too) with a bad cold, which turned into an infection in my sinuses and eyes. I need some of that immune stuff you guys have! :)

I was reading in my journal last week, and it seems as though I have a cold, or something at less every week. It seems never ending to me. I hate being sick. I feel as though, I am in pain soo often..that even a simple cold..is worse then spraining my foot. I think you guys are pretty lucky, to not have many colds..sending a big hug your way

I rarely get a cold; and I haven't had flu for many years. I do get a flu shot every year and we all do a lot of hand washing at our house.

I have had the flu once in the past two years or so. When I get sick I really get sick (fever of over 104). I have lyme disease.

I get sick all the time. Anyone near me has it, I get it. With a 3 year old in daycare, I am sick a lot!!!!

I'm on the fence about this one.

Personally, I feel I'm more immune to colds flu (meaning I don't get sick as often).

At first, I was convinced that this was because ICers tend not to go out as much, and because of that, don't come in contact with as many people and places (germs on people and places).

But now that I get out more...it could be my immune system is boosted...but I've noticed I'm much more conscious of washing my hands, staying away from people or situations that could cause me to become sick.

When I do get sick, for the most part its an annoyance than anything else.
So maybe I am more immune to colds and flu....but maybe being more careful about sanitizing has plaed a part too???

I have had more colds since the IC happened. Hardly ever had a cold. Last year I had two and the year before that three. Started taking a vitamin every day and I sort of get parinoid this time of year. Use lots of clorox and lysol to clean with and when I go to the store of any kind (even at doc's) I use the hand sanitizers. Probably use to much of it but oh well. I also try to never ever use public telephones. Those things are just loaded with germs. :ignore:

I thought I was crazy until I read some of the post. I have had this cold for 4 weeks and I have allergies too. I wonder if there is a relation. My pharmacist said something like the Elmiron an immunologic medicine??? Not sure I know what he means, but he did say that there are some reports of those taking Elmiron will be effected with a poor immune system.. Any thoughts on this?

If you are sleeping less due to peeing so much that could be affecting your ability to fight off viruses. I was getting sick all the time until I started taking Ambien and sleeping through the night.

I do know that when my allergies are bad - my IC is worse - so I do strongly believe there is a connection. Also - if I get sick now - it appears to knock me down a bit more than before (I'm more tired, takes longer to recover etc.)

I'm not sure if it is true, but I get one a month. I swear that it is related.
