I have to go for my Cystoscopy on the afternoon of November 14th. I also took the 15th off from work.

I am wondering if all these posts about pain are the norm for this procedure? Will I need the rest of the week off? Am I going to be in huge amounts of pain after this? I am really starting to get worried now.

I had a cystoscopy done last December. I was uncomfortable when I woke up but they should give you some medicine to take at home that helps numb things. I also had another procedure done while I was under too so that added to the discomfort. I had it done on a Friday and went back to work on Monday. Everyone is different. I tend to be one that usually needs that extra day to take it easy and recover. Just try to remember that with the pain comes knowledge and knowledge is power when it comes to treatment. I was told to take advil for any discomfort or cramping and the other medicine definitely helped with the discomfort when urinating.

When I had my cysto/hydro done, I had it done on a Thursday. I took Friday off, then had the weekend to finish recuperating. Was back at work on Monday!

I was sore and passed blood in my urine for about 24 hours, but after that it seemed to get better and better until I was back at my baseline level of IC. I didn't have too much of a problem with it :grouphug:

No problems here with the cysto/hydro and biopsy. Woke up feeling fine, passed a bit of blood during urination the first few times after the procedure, went home and slept for a few hours, then went to dinner with the family.
Hopefully you'll have an easy experience as well.

take care

Are you having a cystoscopy in the doctor's office or a cysto with hydrodistention with anesthesia? If it's an office cysto, you may be uncomfortable for a few hours afterwards, but it shouldn't be horrible. When I had my first office cysto, I went right back to work afterwards and finished out the day.

I am having a cysto with hydrodistention under general anesthesia. He wants to do the biopsy.

After a hydrodistention, you really should plan on taking a few days off. I would definitely plan on the remainder of the week. Hydrodistention has been and is a major treatment for me since my diagnosis 31+ years ago. I rarely need pain medications after the first 24 hours.

I hope this will help your symptoms as well as making a diagnosis.

I thought the hydro was just a part of the test. I didn't realize that it may put me out of commission for the week.. In order to do the biopsy does he need to do hydro? Maybe I am mistaken on that part?

He said I need to do a cyctoscope and biopsy to test for IC. Then he went into the explanation of what it is (which I knew) and said that he fills up my bladder but that he wants to put me to sleep because if I have IC it can be extremely painful.. Which I told him believe me.. no one is doing anything like that to me without putting me to sleep anyway.. lol

So he didn't SAY Hydro.. I guess I will get clarification from him.

So I guess Hydro wold be filling up your bladder with liquid to stretch it out as therapy and a regular cysto would be just filling it to capacity?

A hydrodistention is also sometimes called an over-distention. They actually stretch the bladder. I think it would be a good idea to clarify with your doctor. You can read about both procedures in the Patient Handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook

I just had a cysto done in my Dr's office, no anethesia, and it was over in a couple of minutes. It just felt like a "pinch" going in, and a bit uncomfortable when he was manipulating the lense. I forced myself to just relax, and count in my head to pass the time. He did fill my bladder with some saline water, but I have no idea how much, and it was just a bit uncomfortable. I'm cramping a bit now, and my urethra hurts, but I'm glad to have a diagnoses.
