View Full Version : Pain meds with an ulcer - does anyone have to consider this?

I just found out a month ago I have an ulcer, which contributes to the horrible stomach pain I've had. I'm taking medication for it, but am now wondering if the pain meds I'm taking for the IC and myofascial pain are making it worse or if there's any "better" pain meds for ulcers?

I'm taking norco 10/325 (?) and avinza (90mg a day) and I'm having to take the norco at least 3 times a day. I also take 3200 mg of neurontin.

This doesn't seem to be working for me but my pain management dr seems to be stubborn about changing anything. The norco seems to "not do anything for me" as a breakthru med and I"m wondering if as much as I'm taking is affecting the ulcer.

Does anyone else have an ulcer or know which pain meds might be "easier" on it but still affective for this awful pain?

Tried vioxx for the myofascial pain and it was wonderful but sent my ulcer through the roof. ~sigh~ can't take it but wish to god I could.

Can anyone help?

Kellie

I don't have an ulcer, but do know that pain medications containing aspirin, ibuprofen, or anti-inflammatories can be a problem with ulcers. Are you taking Elmiron? If so, I would check that out too.

I hope the ulcer heals quickly. You will still probably have some restrictions so it won't return, but should feel better.

Warm healing thoughts,

Just another thought...with an ulcer...perhaps B&O suppositories might work well for breakthru without bothering your tummy...I know many women here on the boards use iit with great success. Wishing you the best, and hope you are feeling better soon! grouphug

have had many an ulcer from meds in the past. I don't know what is the best pain med...but atm Neurontin I take often and haven't had another ulcer yet! Sometimes the best you can do is eat or drink milk every time you take the meds.

You may want to try a lot of calcium, eating several small meals a day, rest as much as you can since stress can make ulcers worse.

Good luck to you.
