My insurance company recently required me to mail order Elmiron. We're in the midst of a cold snap in the northeast and the med froze, so I have tried to determine the effects of extreme temps on the RX. The pharmacists do not know - apparently the manufacturer has done no studies. Does anyone else use mail order - and if so, do you believe the medication is 100% effective for you. I am considering challenging the ins co so that I can again buy it at a local pharmacy.

Janeel,
Welcome to the ICN. As far as temperature goes, I can't answer that one. Effectiveness... I don't think Elmiron by itself is the whole key in my treatment, I use Hydroxyzine with it as well as watching my diet.
What I would say about mail order is that I save a ton of money by doing it mail order. I can order a 3 months supply for $30.00, and I think my pharmacy can only give me a 1 month supply and I am sure it would be a lot more expensive. On my recent order it would have been over $500.00 for that 3 months without my insurance. So I would really rethink not using the mail order method.

Good Luck,
Jolene

I originally bought my Elmiron at a pharmacy and now do it mailorder and have for about a year. I have noticed NO difference in effectiveness at all. This was one of my big concerns, too. I realized that the pharmacy probably gets their stuff through the mail and then it sits on trucks and that helped me not worry so much. AND it is sooooooooooooo much cheaper for me this way. :)

I get mine through my husbands insurance, and I know you would have to have a RX and don't think you can order through them without insurance.

The pharmacist from the mail order finally spoke with the manufacturer, and there have been no studies on the effects of temp extremes. They concluded that repeated freezing (as with first class mail) was probably not good - that a single freezing (as with overnight UPS) was probably not harmful. They also said that heat COULD have a more negative impact - but again no one knows. I recommend that anyone else in this position pay the extra for overnight delivery and request that it be packed in protective styrofoam. Thanks to everyone for their comments.
By the way, this was Aetna RX, and they were very helpful (and reshipped the med for me) I don't know if you need to be an Aetna insured to purchase from them.
