I have had a touch of the flu, and a terrible cough. I used Nyquil, and cough drops and man did it trigger a flare up! I am pretty much over the flu symptoms but I still have this terrible cough, especially at night. It kept me and my husband awake half of the night. :bonk: Is there any cough drop or med out there that is IC friendly?

I cannot believe how much of your life this affects, I kept my poor husband up most of the night because I could not quit coughing and I was too afraid to take anything for fear of a flare up.

Can anyone help me please??? :help:

First, :welcome: :grouphug:

I'm so sorry you are sick. First, do not take NyQuil because it contains a decongestant. Anything with decongestant (pseudoephedrine) is usually a bladder bomb for us ICers. If your cough is coming from post-nasal drip, try an antihistamine like Benadryl.

If it's your lungs, I'd go to the doctor. There are some excellent cough meds that don't usually flare IC... Tussalon is one of them (it numbs the cough nerve so your brain doesn't get as much signal to cough, basically). There may also be newer ones; and of course, there is codeine, but they are loathe to prescribe it half the time.

Hope this helps...

I find Ricola cough drops help me to stop coughing without causing bladder irritation.

I'm also ok with Ricola cough drops or Ludens Honey Licorice drops.
I can also take Mucinex.
Vicks Shower Soothers are very helpful too.
Feel better soon!

Nyquil, eh? I did that once too and it's a mistake I won't be making again! The only thing I can add is to maybe try a humidifier?

I hope you get over this soon. Having a cough that you can't shake is just no fun at all!

HI and :welcome: also....

I have problems with coughing..I get bronchitis alot so I know what you mean about the coughing. It is hard finding something over the counter to help with a cough...Alot of times they wont. And nyquil flares me up huge.

Also if the cough continues I would go see the doc. Especially if its in your lungs like Jen suggested..Could be bronchitis or something else. They can prescribe something a little stronger (with a touch of a narcotic in it) to help with the coughing a night.

Hope you start feeling better soon.
