Hi,

I am a 45 year old male with possible IC. I have feeling that only ladies contribute to this forum, but there must be some guys with the same problem. I hope you could help me.

About three years ago for the first time in my life I got some bladder related symptoms. Mostly urgency, frequency and on the worst days bit of incontinence. After many investigations it remained a mystery (no infections, normal prostate and so on). In the end I got some antibiotics and that cleared the problem.

About 4 months ago I got the exactly the same symptoms and started investigations again. This time antibiotics helped but not completely and I had to stop eating acidic food to stop the symptoms. In one of my urine samples they found atypical epithelial cells and possible cancer had to be investigated. So I went for a cystoscopy with biopsy. The doctors report:

*********************
Endoscopic findings of the bladder confirmed quite significant glomerulations of the bladder vasculature with bleeding on second filling. There was also grade 1 bladder trabeculation, but no bladder tumours were identified. The urethra was normal.

A bladder biopsy was performed and this has shown very mild inflammatory changes but no evidence of malignancy.
*********************

I was in a lot of pain after the procedure and now about 6 weeks I still have some symptoms, mostly feeling of irritation and some urgency. There are some days and hours when I don’t feel anything. I feel that I don’t have typical IC symptoms. For example warmth (like a cat sitting in my lap) would make symptoms worse and I haven’t experienced much pain except after the cystoscopy.

My urologist told me that the finding points toward IC but didn’t write that in his report. I found that GPs know very little about IC and were dismissive that the urologist’s report indicate IC.

My question is: Do I definitely have (in your opinion) IC or can it be something else like atypical urinary infection?

Yes, men can get IC. You might want to look at the list of doctors on the IC network and pick one, then you would be seeing a urologists who specializes in IC. Dr. Robert Moldwin's book has a chapter about Men and IC, which would be an informative read. You can buy the book here at the ICN shop.

Everyones IC can be different. The weight of the cat near your bladder could have caused you pain even though the cat was warm. I wish you the best in finding an answer.

It does sound like it could very well be IC. We do have some men who come regularly to these forums so hopefully you'll hear from them too. The Patient Handbook at http://www.ic-network.com/handbook will help you learn more about IC and treatment options. The diet is there as well, and I suggest you begin that right away.

I hope you feel better soon.

Warm welcoming hugs,
Donna

It must be annoying to not know for sure. What about a second opinion?
Here's a list of doctors in the United States that treat IC:

Hi there and :welcome:

I can relate to the warmth causing problems. Every time I put a warm wheatbag on my lower abdomen my bladder flares up. As most people with IC seem to get a lot of relief with warmth I couldn't understand it to begin with, but like everything to do with IC, we're all different. In my case heat is a big NO NO, whereas something cool like an icepack definitely helps me.

I hope you don't have IC, but if you do you've come to the right place for lots of advice, understanding and support.

Hugs

:welcome: Alan; 45 must be the golden age for IC. lol Have you tried the IC Diet? You said you have to watch your acid intake you might want to give it a try. It really does help. I would think the weight of the cat might also be the problem. Anything leaning against my abdomen causes me pain. Even carrying grocery bags, the baby what ever. Warmth is the only thing that gives me relief, it is so weird how different we all are. Good Luck and hopefully you will have a complete answer soon. Keep posting to let us know.
