Jeannie - I've never had a DMSO instill, but have had regular rescue instills. They use a lo-fric catheter and it usually doesn't hurt too bad. I'm actually afraid to have DMSO - I've heard such positive and negative results it scary to me. Good luck.

If you experience a lot of pain and urgency from the DMSO, taking a pain pill beforehand may well help you. I used to try that, but at the time I did not have pain meds that worked well enough for me, and I found the DMSO treatments to be excruciatingly painful... they also did not work for me. However, there are others who find them extremely useful, so, don't take my word for it. We all react differently.
As for catheters, smaller diameters (12 French or 10 French, the pediatric kind) often make things easier than what they normally use (say, 14 French). The Lo-Fric catheter rosesitty mentioned is also good; it is self-lubricated when dipped in water and is very slippery, so it slides in much more easily than the regular type you've been getting.
Good luck; let us know how it goes! :grouphug:

Definitely ask about the strength. Rimso 50 (trade name for DMSO) is 50% DMSO, and it needs to be diluted enough so the solution instilled is 25% or less DMSO. Most urologists do dilute it substantially. And it shouldn't be held in the bladder more than an hour at most.
When I was on DMSO, they instilled lidocaine first, which made it much less painful --- on one occasion when they mixed the lidocaine with the DMSO solution it didn't help at all.
I hope you will be one who is helped by DMSO. I was for several years.

Thanks everyone!

The tube they use is called a catheter, the girth of it is called "French". Ask them what size french they used on you last time and if they have a smaller one available. Anything over 12fr is usually too much
The clear catheters are usually a lot less painful then the ones that are red/green/yellow, since these ones are rubbery, which causes friction, whereas the clear ones are smother so they go in and out easier
EDIT: Sarojini already answered but I didn't read the whole thread, sorry for the repeat : )

:cussing: i know that I might be to late but my doctor always gives me a demerol shot 20 minutes before the DMSO. He did a lot of reading and knew how painful the treatments are:pray:
I went for the second DMSO, She used a red cath! I did not ask the size, but i will this coming Thur! Because i was in sooo much pain from that cath! I took a lortab before the appt and i took a pyridium that morning. I told the nurse and she was upset about the pyridium because it would affect the urine test.
The DMSO was at 25%.
I was in alot of pain thur and friday, and just very tired. I am doing a little better today(Sun)
I also noticed that my mouth broke out in blisters, along the upper gum line about a hour after the treatment. It did this last week also, is this normal?
thanks everyone for your help and comments!!

No, that's not normal. It could signal an allergy to DMSO. Definitely bring it up with your doctor next time.
