View Full Version : antihystamines for bloating?

I am a little confused reading these threads. I thought from something else I just read on another thread, that the antihystamines were for the mast cells in the bladder that cause inflammation, and therefore bloating (or IC tummy anyhow)
I don't want to add any medications unless I really understand what they are for -- however, my doctor suggested adding benadryl for the shakes I am getting from the withdrawal of some meds I am trying to get off of -- and when I read on here that it helps with the bloating I wanted to see WHAT medication (name/s) others have used that give some relief to the bloating.
I am not in a flare currently, however, there are some foods that are really irritating me of late -- when I quit the food, the pain has stopped (actually it was a tea not a food)
Anyhow, my question(s) is(are):
Does benadryl help with tummy bulge?
If it doesn't what medications do?
Is anyone else using antihystamines just for tummy bloat who is NOT in a flare -- I don't want to trigger a flare...
THANKS!
Mary

Hi Mary,
I too have that "tummy bulge/bloated feeling". I don't have experience with using antihistimines for it. But, what I saw from your post is that you are on Armour. I assume you are hypothyroid. I too am on Armour. It's been very hard to have both conditions. Hopefully we will something that answers your question.

Actually Laura, I am not on it --- have been off for quite a while -- I think it is on the used to use list... I will check and be sure -- because I am not on it now.
I have been really having a lot of weight gain over the past couple of years and I assume it is from a new medication but now, even the fat pants hurt my stomach -- I look about 6 months pregnant and it is so discouraging because, even though people don't ask me (although I was asked once!!!) I know that they are wondering -- when I see how big my stomach is, and that it is all in one big pouch out front -- I just am amazed that I don't get asked more often -- how embarassing -- I just dread the day someone asks me in public -- I will fall apart because I am already very self-conscious about it and HATE going in public when I am really bloated badly --- ugh!
I sure wish there was an answer for it.
Add to that that I had three c-sections and one tubal c-section, so the stomach muscles have been cut through four times -- and I have lost a lot of the muscle strength that I once had ... I know that yoga and core exercises are good for helping with this -- however, the results seem to be so slow in coming -- and I am really stuggling to keep myself motivated to do these daily -- however, I keep trying to remotivate myself to do them so that even if I don't lose the belly -- I will hopefully lose some of the lack of muscle strength and gain more back support -- hence less back aches!
Thanks again for your post -- I don't know the answer yet -- If anyone knows if antihysitamines (particularly Benadryl) works to help tummy bloat, I would love to know about it -- have been taking two every night at bedtime and so far, don't think it is making much of a difference. I have also stopped taking my elavil at bedtime as the benadryl help make me sleepy -- I hope I don't regret doing that -- but hopefully not using the elavil will help me lose a little weight too...
I am actually down about 5 pounds this past two weeks -- so that is a HUGE accomplishment for me - hmmm -- two weeks off elavil, and weight loss in that same period of time -- I wonder??? I hope!!!

My stomach swells too. At times I look like Im about 8 months pregnant. And it hurts~ very uncomfortable. I always thought it was gas until I found out about IC. Although the gas relief pills did make me feel a little better. Usually mine gets really bad in evening - night time. But sometimes I suffer in the morning -mid afternoon. I wonder what to do about it. I hate going out in public looking and feeling that way. One minute my stomach is little and the next , Im huge!!

I've given up on pants altogether until the Elmiron and diet kick in. I haven't puffed up too badly yet, but anything squeezing my waist or abdomen increases my symptoms.
I've gotten to the point where the constant pain is mild, but the flares are nauseating.
