Has anyone had dry and painful eyes since starting Elmiron?

Not sure if mine are from carb reactions or the meds.

No, I didn't have any side effects when I used Elmiron...:)

Eyes can hurt when they are dry. Some medication such as antidepresants, pain meds, birth control pills and antihistamines, cause dry eyes but is ussually not listed as a side effect because it doesn't affect everybody like that. But if a medication has "dry mouth" listed as side effect, most likely it is affecting the eyes too.
Some poeple, specially if you have been wearing contacts for years, you are over 30 or use computer several hours a day, have higher chances to develop dry eyes (specially women -again)

Have an ophtalmologist check your eyes to find out the cause of your eye pain. There are a few test that show the level of moisture in the eye. There are several treatments for dry eyes as well, very effective. They need to be treated or they can become very painful. Dryness can cause damage to the tear film and be more subseptible to eye infections, styes etc.

Note: Eye pain can be also a sign of a more serious condition, high blood pressure in the eye, glaucoma so they have to measure the eye presure and treated quickly.

I asked my ophtalmologist if Elmiron would cause dry eye. He said no.
I suffer from dry eyes before IC and before Elmiron. I can't take any of the antidepresants tryciclic or not. I couldn't tolerate Lyrica.

Detrol LA caused my eyes to dry up along with everything else. I had to have plugs put in my eyes so I could have some tears. I am off of the Detrol now and so my eyes are always tearing now. You can't win! I am scheduled to go to the eye doctor soon.

thanks everyone.

My eyes were a little bit dry before, and I do work hours per day on the computer, but they seem to have gotten a lot worse since June, which is when I began to take Elmiron.

I have drops and have had my eyes checked. I guess I'll use the drops more often.

You are taking a lot of meds and I would bet your dry eyes are from some of the other meds that you are taking. I also take Elmiron and have had no notice of drying of anything.
You say you had nocturia which was a sleep disorder, could you tell me what you meant by that and how did you fix it?

the dry eyes have only been since starting Elimron.

The other meds I take I have been taking for years - and I had no dry eye problems.

The sleep disorder we thought I had was probably the effects of getting up 2-10 times a night to urinate. Now that I am not doing that, I am sleeping through the night and no longer have symptoms of any kind of 'sleep disorder'.

I've been having headaches on Elmiron. (Also the heartburn/nausea returned but Elmiron is not the only cause)
I thought Elmiron wouldn't affect the eyes and I have suffered from dry eyes before Elmiron however my eyes are drier now.
I've also read it from frim other people in here about Elmiron and dry eyes in the Dry eye/dry mouth section.

yes, I think we will all just have to use artificial tears. My vision becomes blurry too when my eyes are really dry.

Try to use preservative free ones. There are many other treaments for dry eyes: humidifiers, eyes mask, warm compreses. Artifcial tears is just a part of it. When eyes get too dry (for watherver reason, medications, contacts, age) you want to treat it soon. If the meibomian glands get obstructed that can cause damage to tear fim.

I react strongly to preservatives, so I make my own eye drops from unmineralized sea salt and purified water. :)

I've really haven't had any reaction to Elmiron, just headaches, but I've started taking the meds out of the caps and put in in a small glass of water, which seems to help. Other than that, no other trouble, including eyes.

WOW! Just a few days of using eye drops consistently throughout the day, and my eyes feel amazingly better.

My vision is not so blurry either.

:woohoo:

I didn't realize dryness could make your vision that blurry by itself. Very interesting.
