:help: I self-cathed myself 1st time - ended up with UTI diagnosed
by my Internist, and sent to Lab. Put on Macrobid.
Macrobid not working.Dr. wanted me to go to ER.
On Saturday, Sept 2, 2006 in ER. Blood tests,
Urine, CAT Scan for Kidneys, pain meds.
Put me in HOSPITAL for 4 days. Kidneys OK but my white count high
in Urine & wanted to culture urine. Started on Gentamycin IV, then
Ceftrlaxone (Rocephin) IV and Saline drip along with pain meds.
NINE days before, IC Urologist at Univ of Maryland's IC Research Dept
had the Urology Dept teach me to self cath - and did one.
I got a terrible UTI from that one too. Put on Macrobid for 7 days.
My QUESTION - this was very scary to have to be in Hospital to IV
antibiotics for a UTI.
I have only been on Macrobid these 2 times - so haven't overused it.
How do you all avoid getting UTIs when you cath at home?
Even being cathed by a 20 year Urology Nurse veteran, I got a UTI.
My other Urologist uses Gentymicin in the Instillation
and gives shot of Gentymicin directly into bladder.
Never got UTI from him but starting getting BAD YEAST infections.
Then on Diflucan 2 days.
Now I am too scared to ever give myself a Rescue Instillation.
I was just starting Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Therapy
at Johns Hopkins. Need OK from the Urologist first.
I am now afraid to do the PFD therapy, which I need so badly,
since I have to have accupressure. I have fear of introducing
Bacteria.
Have any of you ended up in Hospital for 4 days because
script antibiotics wouldn't knock out the UTI?
Isn't this unusual?
I never envisioned myself being in hospital for bacterial infection.
I notice that a lot of you self-cath 2-3 times/week with no problem.
I wore rubber gloves, boiled water to clean containers, etc.
Thanks for any help.
