I have IC and IB and probably am milk intolerant. I am alsways looking for safe things to drink, although my physical therapist says water is best for us. I just get tired of it.......
Thanks,
Susan

hi- i have found one coffee that works for me. it is millstone french roast. also, do not use paper filters. use the wire basket kind that can be washed. it makes it lower acid. i can drink as much french roast millsotne as i want (about 4 cups a day) with no pain. i can also drink starbucks lattes w/ no problem. espresso is low acid and the milk cuts it even more. the darker the roast and the less contact with the water, the lower acid in the drink. i have interviewed many barristas to find this out. i found that it is not the caffeine, but the acid or carbonation in drinks that hurts me. hope this helps!

I have been trying out all the drinks on the list I compiled a while ago, and so far all of them irritate the hell out of my bladder. That includes Roma, Postum and Teechinno. Also, I bought tons of Prelief and five pounds of Pruroast--to no avail. So that's one question I have: any advice on what else I can drink? Also I tried the cinnamon milk concoction but that irritated my bladder as well. By irritating--I mean having to pee every ten or fifteen minutes.

Another question I have: For some reason my bladder is at its worst at night when I'm lying down and trying to relax. Anyone have anything to say about that?

Also, re flares: Please everyone give me whatever advice you can about how to manage them. I tried the heatin pad and that helps some but now enough. I'm still completely tortured.

Thanks to everyone.

SLP53ICIB: Dumb question here....what's IB? Is that the same as IBS????
If it is......Teechino might not go over well b/c it has inulin (the fiber from Chicory root) might be upsetting to your belly. :)

Many of those drinks contain wheat or other grain that has gluten. My bladder cannot tolerate wheat and it took a trip to a holistic dr. to figure that out. have you tried Millstone French Roast coffee? I don't kowwhy, but I am able to tolerate it well. I can also drink Starbucks (only) Lattes. These are worth a try.

Maxine, my pain was always worse at night. I even got to where it would take forever for me to finally go to bed because I knew that my pain would increase, so I was doing good to get 2 to 3 hours of sleep at night for years. I have been treated by different IC specialists and they have both said that many of their patients have the same issue. They feel that when our bodies slow down and our muscles relax and our minds are slowing down, so our pain becomes more noticable. I am doing much better pain wise with no pain during the day, but I still have issues with pain at night. I have to take a sleeping med to make me fall asleep. It took a number of them to find the right one for me, but I am finally able to take my med along with a pain pill and fall asleep. With the sleep med I am on, I have to go to bed shortly after I take it, or it won't be as effective. I still have nights that I wake up in pain, but I am thankful that is rare now, but I keep a pain med by my bed and take it and do whatever I can to stay in bed, and I will fall back to sleep. If I get up, except to empty my bladder, I have a hard time falling back to sleep because my mind is focused on the pain returning.

Yes, IB stands for IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Sorry for the confusion. So I have IBS and IC so it is a double whammy as far as diet. I have been working with a nutritionist-doing elimination diet- I do have sensitivity to wheat and milk. So I went Gluten free for a while-my sympathies to all who are on GF diets. I did find my IC symptoms lessen when wheat, milk and sugar are reduced -the bowel problems are reduced. I cannot take Elmiron due to it hurting the colon-causing inflammation and more IBS symptoms. Sooooooo--Postum, I now know, is a wheat product which does not help at this times. I have just finished the hypnotherapy program I got from HelpforIBS-Heather's Tummy Care--it has been a major help to me-reducing symptoms and even helping the IC reduce-I think the relaxation part.

To Maxine-You seem to be in a bad fix. My IC specialist prescribed hydroxyzine(25 mg) at night which is antihistimine and amitriptyline (25mg) I take 1/2...at night to help with bladder pain and reduce wakefulness and make you sleepy. It helps. I also take Urelle as needed for real pain/discomfort/bladder burn etc. It is a bladder analgesic-prescription-take only as needed-it numbs and is good for a flare.
I really need a good 8 to 9 hours of sleep to help me be more comfortable. I only work part-time now. I am 53 and in menopause-working on HRT to find minimal products to help bladder have a little estrogen-but not my whole system. I am also taking some natural products trying to rebuild the bladder wall--Aloe Vera (Desert Harvest) and Cystoprotek (Algonot).

I also see a Physical Therapist for Pelvic Floor Dysfunction--talk to your Dr. about that referral. They can help with a lot of issues.

If you are not seeing an IC specialist -get to one. The Interstitial Cystitis Association has names of specialists for most areas of the country.

Hope this helps--I've had IC for two years.
