:help:
I have just begun a project that I have put off for a long time. I have started the process of getting my membership in The General Society of Mayflower Descendants. It seems that, according to my genealogy, I have a Mayflower Pilgrim, Plimoth (Plymouth, MA) Colony ancestor. Actually two of them if you count both husband and wife (great???-grandparents). They came over to this country from England in 1620 on the Mayflower and actually survived the trip but died within the first year, leaving a son who is in my lineage.
I mailed the Application Review Forms yesterday and hope I hear something, soon. It looks like it will be a long process, if I am accepted to even try for it. I decided I wanted to try to get the certificate so I could give one to my son for Christmas this year. Thought he would get a kick out of it. Luckily, I have a relative who has done most of the tracking of my genealogy already, of which I have a copy.
Anyway...What I would like to know is if anyone here has done this? If so, how long did it take you, how much paperwork is involved and were you successful?
I would also like to know if any of you live near Plymouth, MA?

hi there sharon.. I tracked my dads side back to the 1600's it was a lot of work, and many many hours at the pc. I have never ordered anything.
One year I made it my misson to track down mmy husbands father, and believe it or not I found him out in california... the talked briefly on the pc and once on the phone.. Hubby told him about his past, and low and ehold he was written off.. Guess who felt horrible?
I wish you luck on all you are doing it is long hours, but quite interesting :)

I know what you mean. For several years I've been trying (not very hard, I admit) to qualify for Daughters of the American Revolution --- I have three ancestors who should qualify me. Guess I should start writing letters again.

Donna...From the Family Tree that my dad's cousin sent me, it seems that I also have at least three family members who were in the American Revolution. She even gave a book title, author, and page number where one of them (direct lineage) was mentioned. I was thinking of investigating that along with the Mayflower story since they are in the same family line. I'm a glutten for punishment. My dad's cousin did a great job with the Tree. It makes my job much easier. She even sent me lineage from another family group that goes back to the 900's in Bohemia. Have you checked out The Family History Center (FHC) at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints? They are a hugh source. Donna...Check out a DAR website on a search engine. That's what I'm going to do to find out what I need to do for that.
Cindy...Yes, I know it can be a long project. I have already spent many hours on the computer trying to verify some missing information. I am very lucky that the cousin has already done much of the research and putting the stuff in a binder. I just have to get some evidence to back some of it up. Like birth, death and marriage certificates of later generations. I already have proof of the Pilgrim lineage to 5 generations.
This project is a cool way to spend these very hot summer days and nights we have been having of late. I just wish I could find pictures of some of my great-great-grandparents. Now that would be very cool.
It would also be very cool if there was someone on these boards who is or has already done what I am doing and got approved for the Mayflower connection. Wouldn't that be great for me and for you. We could end up being long lost cousins separated at birth.
This stuff gets in your cells. I can see that it could become an obsession. What's really cool about this is you are learning history that your relatives where a part of so very long ago. Makes history come alive. Just wish I had known all of this when I was in school learning about the Pilgrims and the American Revolution. What fun that would have been.
If there is anyone out there who have already gone through the process of becoming an approved member in the Mayflower Society, General Society of Mayflower Descendants or the DAR, please post some suggestions and hints as to how you did it. I would be so greatful for any help I can get.
Thanks...Oh, by the way...you can now call me "Bones".:hmm: :lmao:

I need to write to the DAR and ask if they will accept information from the Harding family history. My mother's cousin did the research and it was published in 1958 so they just might.
Now I think I need to go back to the Family History Center --- I've spent many hours there.....
