Hi There -
I have IBS/C and now that I'm on Ditropan and Elavil, I'm getting more constipated. I get worried because my stools are usually thin - narrow, Pencil like and ribbons shaped. I had a colonscopy about 4 years ago and was told it was IBS. My stools have been like this for a couple years so I'm assuming it must be IBS. When I take Metamucil, my stools are better formed. Anyways, I went to the store to buy some Colace. (I've heard it's helped many on this board). But I was shocked to see that a bottle of 100 pills was $26.00 on sale, regularly $45.00 at Stop N Shop. Is this correct? I didn't buy a bottle. I've tried other brands of stool softeners but they never worked. I didn't want to spend so much money. Also, does Colace help form your stools?
Thanks,
Sandy

You might want to look for a generic. It should be right next to the Colace on the shelf.

it's expensive. i find the generic just as good. it's not cheap either. it doesn't help form anything, just makes it come out easier. i take psyllium tablets for constipation and for diarhea, that would help with bulk. dr. moldwin also recommended milk of magnesia for me for constipation ,but honestly it looks so vile i haven't yet tried it.

Thank you Donna & Vi for responding to my post. Maybe I'll try the generic Colace. The other one is so expensive. Vi - I have tried Milk of Magnesia and you are right..............It is so vile tasting, that I just can't get myself to take it. It didn't really work for me either. Thanks again and have a nice day.

I saw the generic Colace in the amazon.com health&wellness section. It was really inexpensive compared to the regular brand name one. When I get close to running out of mine, I think I'll try it out.

Kadi - I think I'll try the generic brand too. Did it have a different name? I'm sure it probably does. I'll look into it. Thanks everyone for replying to my post. Everyone is so helpful here.

I was just wondering if anyone has a reaction to the red dye in the colace. I have started so many new meds since diagnosed that I am not sure I am truly reacting to the colace or even the dye. The colace is not really helping me move and it is still making me have huge flares after a bm. I had to stop using all makeup with any red dye in it over the last year because my eyes watered and sinus' went crazy each time. Just wondering???

I was getting these at Walmart for not very much money, but then, we were in Sam's club and they sell 2 bottles for around $5 - $6 if I remember correctly -- I can check again next time I am there. There are 200 capsules per bottle -- so that is a really good price!
This has the active ingredient of: docusate Sodium 100 mg I am not sure if that is the same as Colace but I think it is if I remember right.
I use it without any problems to the IC and I stop taking it without getting constipation -- however, I drink a LOT of water and that probably helps as much as anything else I use.

Hi
I was just wondering if the colace was red red or a see thru orange gel pill.
I took one last night with a glass of water and felt like my bladder was going to explode.

My husband uses the one with the red dye. I think it's a gel capsule. I have to look more closely next time.
I have been thinking about taking it since my IBS has been acting up but I fear that it might irritate my IC. I am so sensitive to the fillers and dyes. Everyone is different I guess. I see so many take it here without a problem but then again......you just never know. Listen to your body. If you bladder hurts after taking it ....lay off for a while.
I just have to get the nerve up to try it.

What I use is a red and white geltype capsule -- football shaped. It is a soft gel cap. I was curious if someone on here with the actual COLACE could list the active ingredients and someone with the GENERIC would list the ingredients... that would be helpful.
I just started a colon cleanse and a liver detox (a forty day program) and I am doing well on it so far -- already started having better bms too. :toilet:
I think I am going to stop the stuff I am taking in the meanwhile because I don't think I will need it on this program -- it is an organic detox/cleansing program and I decided I would use it mainly because I am detoxing from the Klonopin (a drug that is giving me fits to get off of -- ugh) and I am hoping that if the colon is well cleansed, the little bit of Klonopin I am still on will get absorbed better and that I can finally get to the place where I can reduce to the next dosage -- also, I am guessing that the liver could use a good detoxing as well after 16 years on the Klonopin.
Anyhow, just saw this post up again this morning and wondered if we could get the ingredients for the Colace and Generic Colace posted on here by people who use it.
Thanks,
Mary (Shep)

The active ingredient in the Colace brand pills is Docusate sodium. It is also a red/white softgel.

The brand name is a really red red and I have found that the dulcolax brand is orangish. I really do think I had a flare from it. I had established that I had problems with the fd&c red from some cosmetics. I used to wear a couple of different makeups that would make my whole face (nose, eyes, etc) go crazy.
I stopped taking the colace and went to a GI that put me on Zelnorm.

Thanks Lisa,
I wanted to confirm that what I was getting at Sam's Club was the same ingredients -- it is. The price is significantly lower than what even the generic was at Walmart.
Hope that helps and thanks for posting the ingredients!

Plain magnesium tablets work as a laxative and are cheaper, and no dyes. (Collace really bothers me after longer term use.) They also can relax you...good in the eve. Go to a health food store and ask if they think the liquid form would be better for you. It doesn't tast as bad as milk of magnesia...but guess what the key ingredient of that is anyway.
Also because everyone is so concerned about osteoporosis, we are od'ing on calcium, and no one is taking extra mag. so it's good for that reason as well.
