I have a 9 year old son who still sleeps in the Nighttimes underwear because he neve wakes up when he needs to go at night. He never has. Our pediatricians over the years have continuously told us that there is nothing physical wrong with him and I have had him checked for IC and everything else and all comes back normal. He is completely healthy and has no other issues except that he is hearing impaired and wears hearing aids for places like school and church but does not use them at home or play or sports.

We have tried setting the alarm and waking him up to go every hour or two and this will work for the first half of the night and then at some point he starts to be wet inbetween the trips to the bathroom. I can't tell for sure but it seems like he is not going all at once but little bits - like infants do - where the bladder stays empty. Has anyone had any situations like this? I am desperately wanting to help him. Our family is great about it. We treat it with dignity and give him his privacy but he is old enough that he is going to church camp and sleep overs and it is getting harder and harder for him to hide it. Are there any other things to try besides the old faithful DDAVP medication, withholding fluids after a certain time, getting up through the night, sleeping in underwear so he "feels" it right when he starts to go...none of those things have helped. He pedi keeps telling us that he will grow out of it and that it is not that unusual. He said it is one of those best kept secrects of parenthood that a lot of little boys his age still wet the bed at least twice a week and that they always grow out of it.

Any advice anyone or words of wisdom? I feel like I want to do what I can to help him so if there is something else I could be doing I want to know about it! Thanks in advance!

Your pediatrician is right. It's not that unusual. Think about it this way --- would the manufacturers be making and advertising incontinence underwear for children if only a few had the problem.

One of my nephews was 14 before he finally stopped.

You are very wise to not make an issue of it.

What your son is going thru is not uncommon. I was a bedwetter until I was in my early teens. (Im 27)Thats when my parents finally took me to the doctor. I went thru some tests and he put me on some medicine (dont remember the name) and it allowed me to wake up. Now, I have the opposite problem. Im on medine (elavil) that allows me to sleep so that I dont wake up so often to go to the bathroom. Go figure:rolleyes:

Also, my brother was a bedwetter until jr high. He ended up having to go thru surgery. I dont remember what they did (10 years ago). All I remember is that they took an needle or something (this is grose) up thru the hole in his penis to fix something. What I rememeber the most is that he walked around in a baggy robe (naked underneath) and he walked with his legs far apart for a day or two after the surgery.

Something may not have developed properly in his body. I remember that bedwetting is more common in boys than girls. I would talk to his doc about this being an internal physical problem. You never know. Good luck with your son!
