 Hello everyone,
I just got back from the urologist today and they have me sceduled for a hydrodistention with urethral dialation to see if I have IC. I am very anxious to see if this is what I have, and what had made my life pure HELL for the last 6 mo...BUT I am so nervous for this procedure I could just cry. I just wondered if anyone could tell me what to expect from this. I have had a cystoscopy with NO anestesia..so I can't imagine that it could be worse than that, because I will be asleep..but I am very worried for after effects.....what kind of pain will I be in, how long doesi t last?? If anyone can pass along some info I would GREATLY appreciate it! I wish everyone the best.

There is a hydrodistention section on here and you might have more luck getting answers if you go to that section...

I get the hydrodistention for therapy about once a year because I can get a good several months of improvement in my symptoms after I have one. Being asleep really makes the procedure relatively easy. I usually have a few days of increased frequency and urgency as well as urethral burning just from the trauma of the procedure itself. I will take urised or urelle or pyridium - something like that to help ease the discomfort. Within a few days that will start to get better. Last time I requested to come home with a catheter for a couple of days and that was awesome. That way while I was recovering I was not getting up and down every little bit to try to pee. After 2 days the uro took it out and I was fine. I usually will take pain meds for those few days after as well. It is a good idea to have them just in case you need them. Overall it is not a difficult thing to go through - especially compared to the IC itself! Within a week or two you should be over the effects of the procedure and hopefully even seeing some improvement in your symptoms.

Keep us updated and let us know how it goes. Feel free to ask questions anytime!

After a hydrodistention, the first few times you urinate it can cause some pain; after that it isn't bad at all. And some of us find we gain relief for at least several months from the procedure. I hope you'll be among those of us who benefit.

Warm healing thoughts,
Donna

I just had a hydrodistention this past week. I had a little more bladder irritation the next day but otherwise no problems. I am not sure if it helped or not yet though.
