RTX, aka resiniferatoxin, received fanfare a few years ago as a potential new treatment for IC but the clinical trials were not encouraging. However, researchers in the UK have apparently created a new single dose use for RTX and report that it had some success.

15 patients participated in this a very small, open label study. Prior to the RTX application, patients received an intravesical lidocaine instillation, clearly designed to reduce the pain and discomfort associated with RTX. They then received a single dose.... 100ml of a 50nMRTX dissolved in 10% ethanol in saline... which was administered via a catheter. Patients were asked to hold for 30 minutes.

Results showed an increase in capacity and improvement in frequency ... but the results were apparently not long term. Similarly, some patients experienced pain during instillation that made it difficult for them to hold the medication and/or complete the instillation.

Ultimately, this is a stretch and requires much further research before it can enter the IC treatment spectrum. But it is interesting.
