Hi all,
Just needing support and not wanting to feel so alone.

I woke up at 2am with bad bladder pain, & frequency. I thought it was from the internal exam at the pelvic floor physical therapy yesterday, but the pain got worse, in spite of 2 Darvocets, an instillation, and Pyridium. At 4:30am, I called a friend to take me to the ER.

They checked my urine twice, it came up positive for white & red blood cells & bacteria. The doctor said it was an infection and wrote pyelonephritis (which he said means bladder/kidney infection) as my diagnosis. They gave me Dilaudid, which relieved my pain for a few hours, but made me throw up at the hospital and in my friend's car on the way home (fortunately, I brought the basin from the hosp). The doctor gave me a script for Macrobid & said I should see improvement in 2 days.

I'm scared, I haven't been this sick in a long time. I hope the antibiotic works quickly. I have 8 Darvocet left and the ER doctor told me the only thing he prescribes is Vicodin which I can't take. I called my uro's office to ask them to call in a refill, but I don't think I'll be able to get any because the local pharmacy only stocks it in red-dye colored pills & they won't be able to special order it over the weekend.

I'm so grateful my friend lives so close & was willing & able to help me this morning (and didn't freak out when I threw up in the car). The pharmacist was helpful too and got me the Macrobid in under 10 minutes. The ER doctor was kind and extra careful to have the urine checked twice when he saw all my antibiotic allergies, which I really appreciated. There was one abrupt nurse, but the others were pretty nice and tried to help. Overall, it could have been a lot worse, so I am grateful.

How could this happen so fast?? I felt fine yesterday afternoon, then this happened... I've had more flares in the last month than in awhile, could this have been quietly brewing?

I'd really appreciate prayers & support.

I also have that problem. What I think is "just a flare" will quickly turn into the kidney infection--and its always my right side.

I love Dilaudid - it does take my pain away, but I have to take it with Benadryl and it has to be administered slowly or it will give me an asthma attack. I was in the hospital 4 days over this past weekend with a severe case of the flu. Twice the nurse administered too quickly. (Sometimes they just dont listen to me!!!)

Do you know if they cultured your urine to make sure the antibiotic is appropriate treatment? I would give the antibiotic a couple of days but if for any reason you feel worse, [please call your doctor or go back to ER.

Hope you feel better soon!

Thank you Tara & Donna,

Yes, they did send it for a culture & said they'd call me in 2-3 days.
My regular doctor's office did come through & call in the Darvocet for me that day and, bless the people who work in the pharmacy, they had saved dye-free pills for me from the last special order, so I'll have pain relief this weekend.

I still don't feel good, but I woke up today better than yesterday, so hopefully a few days of rest & I'll be back to normal.

Thank you for answering- it matters.
