View Full Version : Finally over the shock. I'm pregnant!

Well, just when we were getting ready to try for #2 four years ago I developed IC and that put that plan on hold. A couple of years later we decided we were happy with one child. (I was also scared of having IC and being pregnant) So, I had an IUD put into place.

Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago....my IC is under control, I'm happy and healthy, and I discovered that I'm pregnant!

I was camping my my family in the midwest and my cycle came for a short day and then disappeared. Then my frequency went up like crazy and I was getting a wierd crampy feeling. I was sure I was starting to flare and was just getting ready to start on my usual meds when I mentioned my wierd cycle to my husband. He was the one who suggested peeing on a stick, just in case. I, of course, thought he was nuts but I did it. I've never been so shocked as I was when two lines appeared on that test.

Keep in mind, I still had the IUD which is supposed to be 99.9% effective. Thankfully, a local ob/gyn removed it and I haven't had any problems. In fact, I've had two ultrasounds since and all seems to be on target. Looks like an early March baby. My doctor's response to the IUD was, "well, someone has to be in that .01%!"

It wasn't at all what we were expecting or planning, nor is it anything we would have consciously chosen, but we are thrilled! Please keep fingers, toes and everything else crossed for us.

Thanks everyone!

Jess, I was using the copper IUD, the Mirena is different because it has a bit of hormone in it. Also, I'll throw this out there because I don't want to scare anyone from using an IUD. I LOVED it for the two years that it worked. But, I have a slightly bicornate uterus (heart shaped) so it's really quite possible that had an impact on how it worked (or didn't!) for me. Really, it is one of the best methods of birth control. However, if all goes well with this one myhusband will get the joys of visiting his local urologist for a quick snip. ;)

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I too am pregnant and my IC is doing great! I am beginning to think that pregnancy was the best thing for my symptoms. I'm hoping that the harmone boost will last through nursing as well.

hi mom in ma, i'm considering getting the copper paraguard iud but i'm scared about what it might do to exacerbate ic symptoms. i read that you had it in, did it cause you any probs and did you have the paraguard?
perhaps you've had the new baby by now, congrats.

Actually, I got the copper iud because it doesn't have the hormones that would likely have impacted my IC. I loved it! Had absolutely no problems between the iud and my ic. Sadly, we ended up losing the baby midway through the pregnancy. Bu that is a story for another day.

lol, well, just goes to show that NOTHING is foolproof! And the IUD is MORE effective statistically than tubal ligation or vasectomy, that's some food for thought! I have the Mirena IUD as well.

Congratulations! Sounds like this was definitely meant to be! Best of luck to your family!

I am going to close this thread - it's outdated and "mom_in_ma" indicated above in a recent post that they lost the baby. :(

I think people have unintentionally only seen the first part of this thread and missed her update on page 2.
