Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has had any success with normal fortified breakfast cereals. I stopped eating them immediately when i was diagnosed and now only eat organic cereal with no additives or artificial anything. But, I think my nutrition is lacking because of the limited diet. I found some multivitamins today at GNC that are for children, all natural, no added colors or flavors. My Dr. recommended them, so I"ll give it a try. It just seems easy to get a good bit of nutrition from breakfast cereal. While the organic cereal tastes good, there really aren't many vitamins.

I do ok with Cheerios and Special K.

I do miss my cereals, too!

I have found that I can eat Honey Nut Cheerios (my dr told me to try that cause my cholesterol was high). I also have found that I can eat oatmeal, too, but I don't eat it on a regular basis.

Great that your doctor advised you to go the children's vitamin route. The other thing to keep in mind is that even on a fairly strict IC diet, you CAN get adequate nutrition.

Milk and lean meats are usually IC friendly, as are soft cheeses
People can usually eat more fruits than they think....and often once someone is doing ok from treatment, they can add some fruits back into their diet.
Vegetables are an IC patients best friends....packed with nutrition.
Whole grains are usually not a problem unless they are highly fortified.

Have you had your blood drawn to check for nutritional deficiencies? Maybe there is something more specific I can help you with. :-)

KIX cereal and LIFE cereal (the plain flavored one) seems to be ok for me.

I think that milk actually flares my bladder. i tried rice milk, but it seemed to bother me as well

some of the cereals tha made my bladder flare are:

bananna nut crunch

grape nuts

shredded wheat

Kashi makes a cereal called Autumn Wheat. It just has wheat and evaporated cane juice, all organic. It is like a slightly sweet frosted shredded wheat... very tasty. I found it at my regular grocery store and at Whole Foods.

I eat Cocoa Krispies... lol my bladder may be a *tiny* bit more irritated from it in the morning but I guess I'm in denial and that's the one thing I'm not willing to give up... I have a hard time with cereals too, I couldn't eat breakfast at all until I was about 12yrs old, I'd involuntarily gag from it sooooo I'm not to eager to switch brands! I love the Cocoa Krispies though and it gives me the chocolate fix without a ton of cocoa and it gives me some vitamins! I actually flare from the granola type cereals.... You can also try regular Rice Krispies, that's probably one of your safest bets! I've never flared from it and it is fortified, just not sugary enough for my taste :smile tee

I eat Special K fruit and yougurt and sometimes red berries. Luckily, I have had no problems with the fruit in these, maybe because they are dried? The fruit and yogurt tastes great and I have stuck with it pretty much.

I can eat most of the hot cereals. Cold cereal usually doesn't have very much nutrition, which is why it is frequently called "empty calories." I'm hypioglycemic and if I have cold cereal for breakfast, my body runs out of sugar about two hours later.
