I have been diagnosed for a year now and on Elmiron since about 3 months.
A while back I tried ayurvedic medication which got rid of my urgency totally and increased bladder capacity but was not sustained. that makes me think that maybe some other medication in addition to Elmiron may help me!
what is hydroxizines role??

Hi there :)

Hydroxyzine inhibits mast cell activity in the bladder, which is believed to exacerbate IC symptoms. Many people with IC (now including myself!) also suffer from allergies, and find that hydroxyzine helps them in that department as well. In addition, hydroxyzine, like many antihistamines, has a calming and relaxing effect on many people. This can help those with nocturia get to sleep.

I think hydroxyzine is a great med; it does so much! It has helped me with IC symptoms and allergy stuff. Although, for some reason, it was never much a sleep aid for me. Maybe that's 'cause I'm used to much stronger stuff, like Seroquel.

As for anti-inflammatories, OTC stuff can be helpful for those who can tolerate it. Tylenol is one example of a common anti-inflammatory. However, it can cause flares in some IC patients, so you may want to try taking it with Prelief. Personally, I took it daily for several months without ever getting a flare from it, but that may be because I'm less sensetive than most ICers when it comes to diet and stuff like that.

If you're into herbal treatmets, I have read that aloe vera also has anti-inflammatory properties. Desert Harvest is a common brand of aloe that many people here seem to use.

Well, good luck on finding something that helps you :grouphug:

My main symptoms were frequency/urgency and a feeling of inflammation. I had very little pain or burning. My uro prescribed piroxicam for the inflammation, and it really helped. It's a NSAID, but other forms of NSAID, like ibuprofen, didn't help as much. Worth a try...hope you feel better soon!
