We went to the surgeon this morning for a final pre-op visit, and then we went to the hospital for Tom's presurgical appointment. They drew his blood, etc, and they did an EKG. The EKG showed that he's had a heart attack. The doctor that told us this did not speak very good English, so I had trouble understanding how bad this really is. It seems as though they're not going to do the surgery now, and send him to a cardiologist instead. They'll do the surgery when his heart is able to stand the strain...apparently nobody knows how bad this is right now, and we're not willing to take any chances!!
We also both filled out our healthcare power of attorney forms and our living wills....just to be on the safe side. Talk about a VERY depressing day.
I'm STILL waiting on the doctor's office to call ME back about my labs. I'm on the verge of losing it....the only thing holding me together is my children because I can't fall on the floor sobbing in front of them. I think I'll go do that in a bath!
WHAT ELSE???????????????????????? :( :( :( :( :(

Hang on, Sandy. You can make it. I do hope Tom will be okay soon so he can have the surgery. :grouphug:

The hospital just called and compared old EKG's that they have done on him in the past and said the new one was consistent with those two....the thing Tom didnt think to ask was did that mean that back then (2001 and 2003) that he'd ALREADY had a heart attack of a minor degree or did that mean that's just normal for him? Apparently the surgery is still on for Tuesday morning......but he's calling his regular GP to talk with him about it. My head is spinning!!!!!!!!!!

Yikes! How frightening! I hope they get Tom's EKG information sorted out so they can determine the appropriate next steps for his treatment.
I know this is stressful and not the news either one of you wanted to hear, but in some ways you can thank your lucky stars (and there are plenty of them in your universe, believe me) that (a) if he did have an attack, it was not that severe and (b) you two can work with that knowledge to find ways to improve his overall health, post-surgery.
I'll be sending lots of prayers and healing energy to Tom ... and you ... over the next few days. :grouphug:
What part of NC do you live in? I was just in Western NC this past weekend. I love it up there!

Thank you for the replies everyone....you guys always come through for me!
poetgirl, I live in Charlotte. My son will be going to Appalachain State Univ this fall for college and I was just up in Boone myself. It's SO beautiful up there....I'm glad he's going to go to school there---we've got a great excuse to come to the mountains now!!!
You're right about the EKG thing...I've been thinking since this morning that IF there really is evidence of a heart attack, then we know that now and it can be looked at before he has a big one.

I know it's very scary for you right now, but I still have my Terry because he had a "minor" heart attack that showed up on a pre-op EKG. If he hadn't had the surgery, he might have gone on to have a severe one. Thanks to that one EKG, our doctor monitored him closely and he ended up having heart surgery six years ago. He's still going strong!

This is a very stressful time in your life Sandy.:grouphug:
I Will be thinking about Terry and you on Tuesday. I know that my husband Joe finally went last year for a complete physical last year after me nagging him and they did a EKG and it shown that he had a minor heart attack somewhere along the line a few years ago, they sent him to my cardio, but apparently, it was a bad lead on their machine. But when they did other tests on him, found out he didn't had a heart attack, but does have other health issues. (he had clogged arteries- so they went in a few days later) - the good thing about that is that he quit smoking.
