Okay, I finally couldn't take the pain anymore. Elmiron and Detrol LA wasn't working for supposedly IC that was diagnosed by potassium installation which to me is worthless because I probably had the bladder infection to begin with so naturally the potassium irritated it and even the saline hurt somewhat. Went to the ER yesterday afternnoon with horrible low abdominal pain, back pain, low grade temp, vomiting from the Hydrocodone/APAP (took two and was probably too much for me). Turns out it is pyelonephritis, (kidney infection). I had a cystoscopy by the urologist May 2and the urine culture was negative. My OB/GYN did a urine and was negative as well, sometime in June. I never had the typical urgency or frequency with IC just abdominal/bladder pain and spasms. How can it be that I had supposesdly two negative urine specimens but the ER catches a kidney infection? Sorry to vent, I'm in the health care profession and sometimes I wonder how often they come up with an accurate diagnosis.

I'm sorry for what you've been going through, and the misdiagnoses (how frustrating!) but I'm so glad for you that it's something curable. So much better than having this awful disease of IC!
Soon you will be feeling much much better, and hopefully will never have this pain again. But for the rest of us...
Blessings,
Lori

Culturing can be tricky. My doctor says a neg culture means nothing.
There are so many variables in culturing!! Just hope you get to feeling better soon and the infection is all the cause of your problems!
Hi,
How did they find it was a kidney infection and how long until this diagnosis since the onset of symptoms? Do you also have pain with food? Hope you feel better soon! Love.

A kidney infection can develop very rapidly. It's very possible that you didn't have the infection when the initial testing was done. You may want to see a nephrologist if the infection doesn't clear quickly.
