View Full Version : Internet hoax - NCUA

This morning I received an email, purportedly from the NCUA, with a "gov" internet address, asking me to go to the site and enter information.

I did a bit of investigating and this is a hoax! I am sharing this because many times seeing a supposedly "government" email address might lead someone to believe the email is genuine.

It's just another scheme to harvest personal information.

Thanks for letting us know, Donna. I would like to add that no credible source (the government, your bank, etc.) would email you or call you on the phone out of the blue & ask you for personal information. It's very important that you don't fall for these scams! Tell them that you prefer to take care of this in person at city hall, the bank, or etc.!

thanks for the heads up on the hoax. I will also let my support group know of this so they don't fall prey to this.

Thanks Donna for the info. You just never know who's around in cyber,
space, so thanks for the warning. You always have something possitive and helpful to say Donna and I thank you for that. You and Jill are two very special people and I hope you both know that. Thanks again.

I would add my thanks for the heads up and some suggested sights as well.

I use urban legends and truth or fiction -- type either name into the search and you will find their sites. Bookmark them if you get a lot of forwarded emails -- 99% of these are hoaxes according to these truth or fiction type sites.

They basically want your email addresses for 'harvesting' -- if you forward it and the next guy and the next... etc... think of all the email addresses that are showing in those emails! That's a lot of money for the harvesters!

If anyone uses pay pal or ebay you may also want to know that YOUR OWN COMPANY will never address your letter as DEAR MEMBER or DEAR CUSTOMER but will ALWAYS address your mail to Dear Mary or whatever your full name is that you have listed with them... These emails (the fakes) should be forwarded to abuse@paypal.com or ebay.com or yourbank.com and they will follow up on getting these nerds off the net. They do find many of them and shut them down -- okay -- until they get another computer and set up and continue to do the same -- but at least it makes life miserable for them for a while! :dizzy:

I have madeit my stance to write a nice, but pointed letter to anyone that forwards me anything -- I ask them politely to please remove me from any forwarded emails -- anything that starts with FWD.>>> I don't want it.. and I have reduced the number of junk and spam emails quite a bit in my own box, but I also include the link to the hoax information and REPLY TO ALL so that the entire list gets the idea -- it is helpful, informative and hopefully will continue to expand the list of those who DO NOT accept and participate in these silly hoaxes. New computer users can get really hurt by these.

An example: When my now son in law was at college a few years back, he forwarded me an email that was warning about a certain file that was a virus and was probably on my computer... to check and if so, delete the file, then empty the trash bin. Well, after years of these hoaxes, I knew immediately that anyone who got his email was in dire straights if they did follow the instructions -- it was a file needed to run windows. Unfortunately, he learned that one the hard way -- he deleted the file. However, by replying to all -- others, including my daughter, didn't delete it and didn't spend lots of money getting the computer to turn back on... the file was one that you needed to turn the computer on... UGH... what are these people thinking? :loco:
