View Full Version : Still Have Infection....Help!

I went to the urologist and saw the nurse again today. She said I still have white and red blood cells in my urine so my UTI did not clear up after 8 days on Cipro. She did say the white blood cells were not as much as in my first culture. I have to take the last 2 days of Cipro and now she put me on Macrodantin 50 mg. for one month and wants me to re-culture this coming Monday. I still feel horrible and the incontinence is still bad. Is this normal that the UTI did not clear up on the Cipro? I thought Cipro was the strongest thing out there. I'm sure all the stress I'm under isn't helping matters. My biggest worry is the incontinence and I really hope it's the infection that's doing this and not something major.

If the incontinence didn't start until you got the infection, it should go away when the infection is gone.

It does sound like your uro's office is moving in the right direction.

Thank you Donna for responding so quickly to my post. I'm so glad to have this website available. I still feel horrible with burning, urgency, and back pain. My problem is I have had the incontinence for quite some time. I'm talking months but I also think I may have had the UTI for that long since I waited months before having it checked, thinking it was my normal IC in a flare. So, I'm hoping this incontinence is from the infection. The nurse said I may also have weakened the pelvic muscles. ARGH!!! This is soooooooooo frustrating. Thanks again for all your help. It really does make a difference. Have a nice day!

I'm pretty sure that there are strains of bacteria or concentrations (?) of it that won't necessarily respond to Cipro. Maybe all you'll need is a different antibiotic???? Or a different dosage of Cipro?

Thanks Kim for your post. I think you are right and that is why they are putting me on something different. I hope you have a nice day!

In my own experience when I get a UTI it takes a few weeks even after I am done with the antibiotics to start to feel better. I guess having the IC it just takes a lot longer for most of us to clear up infections and/or feel better.

I am sorry you aren't feeling well. I hope the macrodantin helps you. And you feel better soon.

Yes, certain bacterial strains will only respond to specific antibiotics, so hopefully the switch to Macrodantin will help you.

When I get UTIs I often have a certain amount of incontinence too -- mostly light leakage, but annoying nonetheless. You may want to ask your doctor for a prescription for Pyridium or Usept, or you can get AZO or Cystex over the counter. These meds are pain relievers/antispasmodics for the bladder/urethra, and can relieve some of your discomfort and the incontinence. In the meantime, wear pantiliners and change them often. That's pretty much what I always did. Sorry you don't feel well - I hope your infection clears up soon! :grouphug:

I'm really worried because this UTI does not feel better and now I'm having back pain. How can they tell if you have a UTI or a kidney infection? I was on Cipro and tomorrow is my last day of that and then I'm on Macrodantin (?) for one month. The dose is low only 50mg once a day. If I feel lousy and still have this infection (which they did see white blood cells still today) how can the Macrodantin at such a low dose get rid of this?????? I don't have a good feeling at all about this.....................

Sandy, this is awlful. I'm sorry you are going through this pain. I am like everyone else, switching antibotic might do the job. But if you don't find relief soon, I would talk to the doctor again. Be praying for you.
