I instill every day and have for the past 18 months. I came down with my 3rd bladder infection yesterday. I never got infections before instilling but I can't take elmiron by mouth so am forced to instill it.
I try to keep everything clean and wipe with a baby wipe. Do you think I should use an anti-bacterial wipe? I tried that before and it burned but I'm willing to if it would keep my infection rate down.
It takes my bladder atleast a month to calm down after an infection so I am feeling upset and frustrated today. Does anyone have any other suggestions ? I am already going to the bathroom right before so I don't have to drain my bladder with the cath as I use a pediatric size.
Thanks, Elsie

I really don't know too much about cathing.. but here is my suggestion.. what about getting the stuff they clean you with at the hospital before they cath, its that orangey stuff.. and do you use a a new cath everytime? that there alone could be the problem.
good luck:)

Yes, I do use a new cath each time. I get some kind of wipe to clean off with at the uro's office. Not exactly sure what it is.
Thanks tigger-gal for responding to my post. I hope you are having a good bladder day.

That orangey stuff is Betadine. I use it when I have to cath, and it does not cause me any problems. You can find it a most pharmacies, or at Walmart, near bandaids and first aide supplies. It is pretty inexpensive. I hope it works for you too! Hugs, Amy

i wash my in soap and water then i let them soak for twenty mins in white vinager and water then air dry. After they are air dried I then would place them back in the org. package they came out of.

I don't do this anymore I new use one each time.
sending you hugs and prayers

You might try a lo-fric cath. You can order some samples from the company. You use a new one every time you cath. I like them for that reason. You also don't have to use KY. You add water to the pack and it makes them super slippery, some sort of high-tec coating on the outside of them. I also use Hibiclens to clean. You might try taking d-mannose every time you cath?

I use Dial antibacterial soap for cathing. I first wash my hands thoroughly, including using a nail brush to clean under my nails. Then I wash the area with a sterile gauze pad and the antibacterial soap. When I've finished, I usually shower so the soap is rinsed away. Betadine does stain clothing so if you use it, be very cautious.

Helo, I was told to jst use sterile water. Boil the water in a pan or kettle and rince the catheter in the sterile water. SWap the vagina with the sterile water. Using chemical can do more harm. Apply the jel and insert the catherter. It has worked for me. I now insert a folys catherter on free drainage at night so that I don't have to get up during the night I have slept right through til morning without getting up frequently. Worth a try. I am on a daily dose of antibotics to cover for infections. I hve notest that the pain has been greatly reduced. I have had one infection since I started this about 6 wks ago. Its worth a try. good luck. Wendy.l

Thanks to all of you who came to my rescue about instillations. I saw my GP and he has given me a script I am only allowed to use the macaine and the soda bicarb. He said to try it weekly and see how I go. The chemist had to order the ingredients and I can only start the treatment on Saturday. He didn't want me to use the gentamicin or the heparin. I am on an opoid pad one every 3 days and so far the first one has given me some peace. I will make up the injection myself It is a 4occ of bicarb and 20cc of macaine mixed together. I have a paediatric catheter and also a size 12. I will see which is better. I have to try and keep it in for about an hour and to lie on my back, then one side , to the front, then the next side and to sit up so that all the mixture comes into contact with all parts of the bladder especially by the trigone muscle. That is the most painful part. Thank you once again. PS I still cannot get into the private messages I have one left in and the other I deleted by mistake. God Bless Wendy.

Like She Said, Definelty A Daily Dose Of Antibiotics, Evrytime I Would Go In For Any Type Of Cath Treatment They Would Give Me A Levaquin To Take To Prevent Infection...It Wouldnt Hurt To Help!!
