View Full Version : Going more at night?

OK, so I've noticed a pattern lately. I seem to be OK in the day in terms of going to the bathroom and sometimes I'm even able to have a couple of hours in between bathroom breaks (I know! Amazing!) However, as soon as evening sets in it seems like I start having to go to the bathroom more and more (If I'mwatching TV it's sometimes every commercial). When I get into bed to sleep I have to get up and pee every 10 minutes or so for about an hour before I fall asleep. Some nights are worse and I've been up as many as 20 times, all within a 2-3 hour period (that's at my worst normally I'm only up about five times). I think part of the problem is I have trouble getting to sleep. It can take me up to four hours to get to sleep. I tried taking atarax at bedtime to help but even a low dose and I was still groggy and almost crashing my car on the way to work in the morning.
OK so I guess the point of my long windedness is does any one else find they go more at night than in the day? OH and I don't force myself to hold it or anything during the day. I go when I need to.

Melissa, that is my problem exactly!! I am up and down, up and down all night long. I have a TV in my bedroom, and it's every commercial, like you said. On a bad night, it's more often than that. I've done the every 15 minute thing more times than I like to remember :( On a normal night, I'm up about 5 or 6 times. But like I mentioned, on a bad night, it can be dozens of bathroom trips. I get so discouraged sometimes. I've had nights where I never did fall asleep. I went 5 nights once with not a wink of sleep, and was starting to see things that weren't there. That was the scariest time of my life I think, EEK!! Nowadays I might have a night or two like that, and then I usually am back to normal.
Also, it doesn't seem to matter how much I drink!! I can drink hardly ANYTHING and still be up and down all night. Go figure!! Then somedays I am so thirsty I could drink a gallon of water, and not have to get up. I don't get it??
I'm still hoping we can come up with a 24 hour chatroom on here someplace so that we can all get up and chat when we're having a flare-up :) Sure would be nice to know we're not alone in our insomnia!!

You are describing nocturia or a lot of nightime peeing. My Uro told me that the body actually makes more urine at night per pee than in the day, but there is also a hormone secreted that usually turns off the urge to pee.
Sometimes they actually give this hormone as a medicine to try to turn off the water works, its called, arginine vasopressin. If your normal bladder can hold a certain amount awake, they will have you measure what you are peeing at night. Some bladders just wont hold any more urine without peeing.
Sometimes they will give a diuretic early in the afternoon so it wears off by bedtime and that helps some people. Others they give the medicine Desmopressin is the name of the med they use. Sometimes just a dose of overactive bladder meds will help.
I too have nocturia but not nearly as bad as you do. I dont drink after 6:00PM, not that it makes much difference. I usually wake up every 3 hours to pee during the night, but the volume is pretty hefty. I tried taking my overactive bladder pill at night which helped some also.
Sometimes it takes a trial and error thing to find the right combo, persistance is the key to figuring this out with the help of your Uro.
