View Full Version : Music to lift our spirits - What do you listen to?

I admit it, I'm one of the crazy people you see driving along in the car next to you looking silly because they are singing along to the music without a care in the world. Music lifts my spirits and, honestly, if you could hear what I'm usually singing, you'd laugh! I specialize in bawdy story songs ... usually from Ireland and Scotland with a healthy dose of modern pop. Love the latest Kelly Clarkson CD in my car.. and can't wait to hear what Taylor Hicks does on his first album. In any case, I digress!!!

My daily survival routine here at the ICN office also heavily involves music. I can't sit in silence... I need happy, fun music to keep me energized and ready to face the IC community with all its inherit demands.

For anyone not familiar with ITunes or live365.com, I recommend both highly! Itunes (for Mac users) let's you buy songs or albums to play from your computer. I buy a few tunes a week...and have a good collection so far (Shania Twain, Nickel Creek, Old Blind Dogs, Keith Urban, Steve Wariner, Vanessa Carlton, Bon Jovi, Sugarland, Chumbawumba, Great Big Sea, Counting Crows, the Corr, No Doubt, Faith Hill... and the list goes on). To me, it's all about having songs that I can sing along to. It's got to be uplifting... not sad! I can't bear to listen to Enya... unless it's a very hot day and I need to be cooled down. I want energy!

Live365.com is also awesome! Love it! Love it! Love it! You can find thousands of music channels created by other people to listen to FOR FREE! For example, I'm listening right now to the RenRadio station which is celtic music with a healthy dose of story songs that make me laugh. What's really funny is that my cats now come running when they hear me singing GlenLogie, or The Fox... or whatever... . even if I'm in the shower. I'm not sure if they're trying to tell me to stop singing or if they like it. I confess that when I play my tinwhistle, they jump up and nip my arm trying to get me to stop... sooooo.... ::as she chuckles::: Hey, if it makes me laugh, it's a good thing! IC is hard enough... I want to laugh every day!

So, if you need a lift for your spirits, I strongly recommend bringing a little music into your daily life. Check it out! From Hawaiian songs to movie or TV soundtracks, they have it all... as well as a huge collection of music for various holidays. I also listen to the Disney soundtrack, Science Fiction movie themes (i.e. Star Wars, etc.), Broadway, Pop, Dance. It's all there!

Enough about me, what music do you love to listen to?

If I just want to totally de-stress on my commute home, then I roll the windows down and crank up my Blondie cd

I listen to many different kinds of music -- it's hard to even pinpoint any one thing!

Lately, I've been doing a lot of chanting (kirtan), which is music (often Indian, but you can find some that are more "world beat" variety now) set to Sanskrit mantras. This practice is part of some yoga traditions and is very engaging and emotionall uplifting.

Hi Jill,
I love all kinds of music but alternative rock (Coldplay, Radiohead etc.) and classical music are my favorites. Do you have an ipod to put all your itunes on? I was thinking of getting one.

At the moment Kelly Clarkson is my favorite. I can't get enough of her and I am so sad that I am too sick to go and see her in concert here on the East Coast but I will be there in Spirit. My Husband thought of a thousand ways to get me there and was even willing to pay $250 for the tickets so I could get the 11th row inside the theater. We both decided that it was just way too dangerous after such major surgery so we decided to wait until she comes around again someday.

Here's my list. I listen to a wide variety of things this is just some of it.

Evanescense
Edwin McCain
Disturbed
Nickelback
Lifehouse
Aviril Lavigne
Ashley Simpsom
Jessica Simpson
Christina Aguilera
Mariah Carey
Willie Nelson
Faith Hill
LeAnn Rimes
Shania Twain
JoDee Messina
Amy Grant
Eva Cassidy
Clay Aiken
Bo Bice
Carrie Underwood
(I also listen to a LOT of my Husband's Uderground Heavy Metal)

(These are only the CD's I have right in front of me now. The others are in our cars and in our CD shelves)

I was also a Taylor Hicks voter as was my Husband and we are looking foward to his first CD!

Music is the one way I try to foget that I have IC for a little while. My favorite thing is to throw on a piar of sunglasses, make sure my nose stud is in it's place, sing with all of my car windows down, with my 9 speaker stereo system booming out whatever it is I am in the mood for at that time. Could be county, could be heavy metal.

Yeah, Yeah, you can call laugh at me now.....

I feel like a litte Eva Cassidy Right now...........

I totally love Hawaiian music, with my favorite being the Hawaiian Wedding Song. I also love the classics (Placido Domingo is my favorite).

The only kind I totally detest is the extremely loud base-with-a-beat that actually shakes my car if someone is driving next to me and playing it full blare!

When I don't feel good, I like to climb in bed and listen to Hawaiian....

Having raised to daughters, I learned to listen to anything that was playing on their stereos. When we were in the car, the radio was always tuned to one of "their" stations. Interestingly enuf, I even got to where I could name the groups & sing along to some of the songs. However, I have a TERRIBLE singing voice, so mostly I would just hum (that's the way my girls preferred it, too). LOL But now that I'm alone & can listen to anything I want, I usually choose piano music if I want to relax. But otherwise old time country (Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, maybe some Tennesse Ernie Ford or any song with a fiddle player, etc.) is probably my favorite. Brad Paisley is probably one of the newer country artists that I like. And anything playing is usually played LOUD. Now that I have the house to myself, I can do that!! LOL

Depending on whose car I'm in! If its mine, (runs only half the time) its Oldies, If its my husband its Country, If I'm in my son's its Gospel. (we live out in the country- and with the gas prices the way they are, we share cars).

Oh boy, this is a tough one! I too have quite an ecclectic mix of music and music tastes! I remember one time out on hubby's boat, it was he and I, my brother in law and a friend. The friend brought his mixed Cd that he made and I kept saying "oh! I LOVE this song!!" He looked at me and said "Wow! You really like all kinds of music don't you??!!" I can go from singing Limp Bizkit ("Break Stuff" is my FAVE, so fun to sing when you are really annoyed, lol) to Nickelback, to Keith Urban to Patsy Cline to Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, all in one sitting!!

My collection on my computer is crazy, hubby laughs at my mix. But buying song is sooooo much fun!! I have all kinds of peppy songs for my "Housecleaning Mix", relaxing songs for "Dinner Music Mix" (John Hiatt, Michael Buble`, Sinatra etc) and it goes on and on.... For me it depends on the mood I am in, right now my favorite to sing along with is "Breathe (2am) by Anna Nalick...love that song! And yes, if I am bummed I have been known to play all the sad songs I can find, lol. For me I bet I can tie a song to every major event/relationship in my life so far...

Donna, I also love Hawaiien music. There is a group called HAPPA, supposedly contemporary Hawaiien, but very beautiful songs and guitar playing. The songs stick in your head. Absolutely lovely, you would like it. It's worth to check it out.
They are pretty famous now and travel on the mainland.
Take a listen.

Well, that's not hard for me to decide right now! It's 11pm, I've had a bleep of a day....pain has been SO EXTREME.....My fav is a "sleep CD"...... :shake: It's some has some sort of supposed "scienifically proven" tones and notes in it. (Though it DOES state that it is NOT sublinguil in any way) Now you KNOW your sick when that's what's your liking!!! :loco:

Seriously tho, I listen to ALL types of music. My kids have even turned me on to some of their new stuff...some of it's OK. I listen to whatever happens to fancy my mood at the moment! Music is very mood affecting, thanx for bringing this up! Night! :hi:

I like Ballads! I listen to Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Celene Dion. I love Michael Buble!! Good ole Frank Sinatra! The Beatles, Paul himself, and any of the American Idols.

I usually listen to these on my way home from visiting my husband in the nursing home . It is a 1 1/2 hr. drive, so I put the music on and sing to my hearts content. It also helps the stress from the visit.

As my name suggests, I am partial to country music. My new favorite group is Little Big Town. Their first song was Boondocks, but the reason I bought their CD was for Home. I also love Keith Urban, Tricia Yearwood, Miranda Lambert, Jewell (who I consider folk, not pop..love her new CD). I also like 70s rock like Eagles, CCR, ACDC, and Steve Miller Band. Mom mom used to play that stuff when she was cleaning house when I was little. Im also starting to get into the old country like Patsy, Hank SR, and Willie Nelson.

I pretty much like any music that tells stories. Country music seems to be the genre that does that most often. I have a 45 minute drive home and Im always the goofy lookin one singin along! Music is a big part of who I am. It is one of the ways I use to describe myself. If I didnt have my music...I would be lost! :dizzy:

I have to admit I am also one of those who rocks out hard in my car. I almost caused an accident one day because I was dancing and singing and these guys next to me were laughing and tried to catch up with me and almost hit someone! I dont care who is next to me, I still rock out!
It was quite interesting to read what all of you listened to! Some of you suprised me. Kimchi listens to hard rock? Hee hee.
I am pretty all over the board too. I like celtic, hawaiian, classical, oldies, hard rap, country, and soft rock. I hate that hard metal music. That is the only thing I just cant listen to.
My friends laugh because one day they will get in my car and I am listening to 50 cent, then the next I am listening to Mozart! I have to admit though that I rarely listen to music in my car anymore b/c I am always listening to a book on tape, my new favorite thing.
Good thread Jill :)

Love your list of music and I understand your passion about music. I love to listen to music it can take you to many different places and at the same time can describe so much about you. I just heard Flyleaf for the first time a few weeks ago and love them so much. They are coming to do a show in my city and I cant wait to see them. I love women who can lead a band and be super good at it.

Flyleaf is awesome in concert. Saw them w/ Seether and Shinedown a few mos ago. It was a great show. I took my 14 yr old daughter w/ me. Are you going to see Flyleaf w/ Korn?

06-12-2006, 03:18 AM
No they are not going to be with Korn they are playing at a somewhat small venue here. But I sure wish that was the case, Korn is fun too!!! I bet your daughter had so much fun and just thought that her mom is the coolest ever. That is the way I think of my mother she has been to more shows then I have and some that I would love to go to. Shes like my best friend but at the same time she knows how to be a mother

That is really great. My daughter and I are really close. I have taken her to 3 concerts, the wildest was Kidrock. Had to leave that one early. Too many weirdos hitting on her. Plus the drugs were really bad at that one. Never been to a show like that before. Oh well, live and learn. My next show is Godsmack and Rob Zombie. Seen them both before and they put on a wild show too. My daughter will not be going to see that one. Hehehehe.

oooo I love godsmack. My mom and dad just went to a kidrock show lots of trouble there they said. I met him like 5 years ago in Detroit he was super cool and really laid back. Well I am glad that you are able to get out and enjoy yourself. I am starting to get back that way again like I used to be. And it makes me happy cause I thought that I never would and I was so scared cause I still have my whole life a head of me. I do have bad days sometimes but I am having good days and taking advantage of them when I do.

Godsmack is my absolute fav. I have the GS sun tatooed on my shoulder. I am glad to hear that you are getting back to normal. We must all try to find a way to enjoy life. I do, even if I pay for it for a few days afterwards. That way I can at least feel a little normal.

that is the way that I am feeling right now that I just want to have fun and live my life the best way that I can.

I love feeling good for days and then going back to the pain. Right now I have alot of pelvic pain I am guessing from the PFD. I was going to physical therapy three times a week and now my insurance wont pay for my office visits so its up to me to pretty much pay the full amount which could be like 200 dollars a visit for full therapy. They cut my visits down to two days a week and are only doing the internal therapy on me which is the most important part.

I go and see a urogyno next week and want to ask her about birth control. My uro stopped my birth control which was depo and I dont know if I am having more cramps now and more pain because I will probley start my peirod soon. I have not had one in like 6 yrs but do remember when I did have them they were very painful. Has anyone been put on birth control to stop the pain of peirods I dont know if I really want to go back on depo but if there was something else out there.

I know this is alot of random stuff in one spot but I never know where to write anything.

Jamies.... I am sorry you are having so much trouble I had a hysterectomy when I was 25. I had the worst periods. When I was 14, I went on birth control for awful periods and bleeding and that saved me until I had my daughter. When I went off the pill to get preggers, and then tried to go back on them, I never could get adjusted. You are on the shot, right? Maybe you try the pill? Hang in there girl. :grouphug:

Music is such a remedy in a way. I love listening to all kinds of music, depending on my mood. Love "No Worries" from Simon Webbe, love this scottish band called Del Amitri, love two dutch singers "Anouk" and Ilse de Lange, they sing in English, love happy music and classic music to relax. I find it healing in a way, music makes you forget the pain, it distract you from the pain. I remember when I wasn't taken serious and kept walking into walls for two years it was the music that helped me through it, it helped me to keep the faith and hope and strength to go on. Music can soothe, uplift you and give you that push you need to keep on going.
Anouk (not the singer, same name but not same voice, I can't sing)
