View Full Version : Whatcha reading?
I am just finishing up a WONDERFUL book. Here is the title and a description:
Left To Tell : Discovering God Amidst the Rwandan Holocaust, by Immaculee Ilibagiza.
Immaculee Ilibagiza grew up in a country she loved, surrounded by a family she cherished. But in 1994 her idyllic world was ripped apart as Rwanda descended into a bloody genocide. Immaculee’s family was brutally murdered during a killing spree that lasted three months and claimed the lives of nearly a million Rwandans.
Incredibly, Immaculee survived the slaughter. For 91 days, she and seven other women huddled silently together in the cramped bathroom of a local pastor while hundreds of machete-wielding killers hunted for them.
It was during those endless hours of unspeakable terror that Immaculee discovered the power of prayer, eventually shedding her fear of death and forging a profound and lasting relationship with God. She emerged from her bathroom hideout having discovered the meaning of truly unconditional love—a love so strong she was able seek out and forgive her family’s killers.
The triumphant story of this remarkable young woman’s journey through the darkness of genocide will inspire anyone whose life has been touched by fear, suffering, and loss.
This is Immaculee’s first book.
If you're a Wayne Dyer fan know that he totally endorses her and she has appeared with him at speaking engagements many times. If you're not a Wayne Dyer fan - that won't affect your opinion of the book at all! It is one of THE best books I have ever read.
I'm on the waiting list for it at my library!
You. Will. Love. It. Powerful, powerful book.

I often read 2 books at the same time. Short attention span. Especially if one is more difficult to read than the other.
Right now, I am reading Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Watched the movie for the first time a week or so ago and decided that it was about time that I finally read the book, all the way through.
Also reading the Abram's Daughters series by Beverly Lewis. I am reading The Prodigal which is the 4th in the series. I love Beverly Lewis' books. They are easy to read and a glance into the culture of the Amish.
I looooooove Beverly Lewis and have read that entire Abram's Daughters series. Loved those. :) I saw that she has started a new series. I need to look for the new book.

I'm on a Dean Koontz streak right now....just finished the Odd Thomas books, read Life Expectancy, and now I'm reading One door away from Heaven. All great books with a great sense of humor mixed in with murder, death, and ghosts LOL!!
I've also started reading Patricia Cornwells OLLLLLLLLLLD books from the early 1990's and have really enjoyed reading them again. It's been so long since I read them it was like reading them for the first time.

Sandy, Ive been on a Dean Koontz streak too! Must be the macabre part of it that appeals to me, it is good to read a story of someone in worse trouble than I am...lol. Soul Survivor is one of my favorites.
I also love John Grisham, or any of the same genre.
Non Fiction these days is all about helping and living with a drug addicted adult child, unfortunatley. I am looking for some good books about that subject, any ideas?

I wonder if Claudia Black has written any books for parents? She is such a wonderful substance abuse/recovery writer - seems like she must have some out there related to your situation, Sonja. Have you read AlAnon literature at all? There is one really good AlAnon book called How AlAnon Works for Families and Friends of Alcoholics. Excellent.

I LOVED marley and me! It was a laugh out loud story for me. My husband never reads, and he read it while we were vacationing. We are both dog lovers. We owned a huge Rotti, who passed away 4 years ago. It truely is amazing how some dogs are just so much SMARTER than others. Our rottie was VERY intelligent :)
I am reading the mermaid chair now--EXCELLENT book!

I'm on a T. Davis Bunn kick right now. I'm reading his book "The Amber Room." I like his fiction. They're usually mysteries of sort, but with Christian themes. Not in your face about it, which is nice. Just good books and I'm not usually a huge mystery fan.
I also just recently finished "The Devil Wears Prada." I wanted to read it before teh movie came out. It was pretty good. I read "Wicked" before that - the story of teh Wicked Witch of the West. It was dark, but good.
I love to read and make many a trip to the local library!

I love reading and I recently got into ebooks and one I really enjoyed was border lair by bianca d'arc. it is considered erotica for those who enjoy reading those. has any one else read any of her other books? I do know it's going to be out in print sometime soon.
Tagline:
War has come to the Border Lair, but as enemies become allies… and lovers, hope springs anew for the dragons and their knights.
Second book in the Dragon Knights series.
Blurb:
A young widow, Adora raised her daughter by herself, but her girl is married now. Can Adora find a love of her own in the crowded Border Lair? Dare she even try?
Lord Darian Vordekrais is about to turn traitor, giving up his title, his lands, and his home in order to warn the dragons and knights of his treacherous king's evil plan. Will his life be forfeit, or is there some way he can make a new life in a foreign land?
Sir Jared lost his wife and child to treachery, but he knows Lord Darian and trusts him. Both men admire the lovely Adora, but Jared's broken heart is frozen in solid ice. Or is it?
As war comes to the border, the knights and dragons of the Border Lair rise to the occasion. New allies rally to their side. Love blossoms and grows even as evil invades the land. The knights and dragons must stand fast against the onslaught, the beautiful woman of royal blood bringing them hope, healing and love.
Warning, this title contains the following: explicit sex, ménage a trois

I've been reading a lot of V.C. Andrews books lately. I read a couple of hers a long time ago, and then lately I saw one that looked interesting and now I'm hooked. I've decided I am going to try to read every series. So far I've read the Willow series and the Rain series and another series that consisted of two books (can't remember that one right now). And right now I'm reading the one that I think is my fave and that is the Dawn series--I'm on the third book of that series.
Her books (I say her even though I know someone else is writing for her now), are so good. Full of twists and turns and betrayls and just twisted family stories. They all follow a similar idea---a girl from a poor family finds out that she is really part of a wealthy family and after being sent off to live with her real family she is treated horribly by them.
Anyway, they are very good and interesting books. Anyone else enjoy her books?

I finally finished Pride and Prejudice...ALL THE WAY THROUGH TO THE END!!!!!! this time. :woohoo:
Now I am reading Mayflower by Nathaniel Philbrick (just about finished). That is what has made me curious about my genealogy, again. Some of my lineage are mentioned. I have orderd a few more books about the Pilgrims from
Amazon. They should be here in a week or two.

I have read some of her books several years ago, and enjoyed them, also! I did not know someone else is continuing to write under her name.

I have read a number of books this summer. Most are not worth recommending.
I did love The Memory Keeper's Daughter (author not known, as I gave the book away).
Right now I am reading The Ha-ha. It is about a man who can't speak that takes in a 9 year old boy as his friend enters rehab. I think it is going to be a very touching story, but am in the early pages.
I was disappointed by Jodi Picoult's The Tenth Circle, her latest novel...especially after I discovered her last summer and devoured every book she had written. I also just finished A Wedding in December by Anita Shreve. It was just okay, but a good beach read.
Sharon, I keep picking up Mayflower...is it a good read, as in story line, or would you say it is more historically written, as in factual?? I love great historical fiction, but some is just too heavy. I am between that and 1776 by David McCullough.
Oh, I also read Mrs. Alcott. A very tender story that reveals a woman's look at her marriage and herself through many years and circumstances. I did enjoy this very much. I have given away a lot of these books, so again, I can't remember the author.
